Don't be afraid to ask for substitutions when you're at your favorite restaurant. If that grilled fish comes with rice and broccoli, you can request double veggies rather than rice. Ask for the salad with dressing on the side, so YOU can measure out a smaller amount of calories.
The Couch to 5K program (google it!) is a GREAT way to ease your way into either running or fitness walking. Over a series of 9 weeks (or more -- take as much time as you need to finish!) you will alternate intervals of lower intensity walking with higher intensity running or fast walking. It's so motivating to see your fitness level and endurance improve so dramatically over the course of a couple of months!
A good heart rate monitor can be your BEST friend when you're trying to figure out your calorie burn. The estimates provided by a lot of charts can be really off, so knowing a more accurate calorie burn for your body at your weight can help you more accurate track the work you're really doing.
