Debit vs Credit card

If given a choice by your credit union (avoid for-profit-banks, go with credit unions), choose a fee free credit card over a debit card. Debit cards draw directly from your money, and if pilfered can wipe you out; whereas, credit cards you are usually limited to a $50 loss if reported right away.

Give your retirement a raise

If you are offered a 401k, make sure you initially participate AT LEAST at the matching level. If they match 75% of first 8% you put in, make sure you put the full 8% in. It will hurt at first, but console yourself by watching the balance grow.....With each raise add half until maxed.
