Understanding the reason for my overeating is very important to me. Reading books on this subject also helps me feel that I'm not alone in what I am going through. I've read articles and things on overeating, read books on emotional eating, etc. Books at the library are free. Read On!
The other day I had to get ready for a special event. I looked through my closet and saw ALL the clothes I "grew out of".
I now have a mantra, "I need to wear those clothes."
I repeat that over & over & over & over & over & over when I'm tempted with something good.
When I get a sweets craving I usually do this: I turn off everything that distracts, sit down comfy, and start to enjoy what I craved. Then as soon as I notice i'm not savoring each bite, just eating I stop. My craving is then satisfied and I don't need the whole thing.
I make it a daily routine to drink one cup of water before and one cup after each meal(including snacks). Most days I have 3 main meals and 2 snacks therefore I have no problem getting in 8 cups of water per day. I average 10 to 12 cups per day.
I am knitting a Great American Aran Afghan and each square is a small victory on the way to the finished blanket. I look at weight loss in a similar way. Each kg is a square. Even if I make mistakes and have to rip the knitting back that's ok cos I can knit it back up later. Same for weight loss.
Sometimes when I want a snack and it's not fitting in my meal plan I just "earn it" - 60 minute brisk walk and I can eat that portion of ice cream without feeling guilty. :D With a condition - that walk wasn't a part of my daily fitness minutes and I won't do this every day. ;)
Lately when I get off work in the afternoon I would go home and eat chocolate, cookies or have an ice cream cone. I have started packing an extra apple to eat on the way home. I find that this is helping me to stay away from the sweets after work.
I measure my snacks such as almonds or dried fruit into small serving dishes instead of a napkin or paper towel so that they are more appealing. I have a bunch of small, beautiful dishes acquired from Asian markets and this gives me a chance to enjoy them AND the snacks.
Every week, celebrate your efforts and losses without using food. Whether you want to get a pedicure, buy the outfit you've been admiring, or just take an hour to relax by yourself in a bubble bath. Give yourself a treat because you deserve it.
