I don't always want to make good food choices or exercise so it helps have to have someone to share my day with...the good and the bad. Someone who knows my dreams and goals and celebrates all my successes with great joy. A cheerleader. My daughter is my cheerleader. She is always up for a walk or activity and encourages me to reach my goals. My grandsons are also fantastic cheerleaders and excited to walk to the park or go for a bike ride. Hip Hip Hooray for CHEERLEADERS!
I always have a hard time setting goals. I always start off strong and then a few days later, I've fallen off the wagon. A trick that I've learned is to settle on your top goals that you have for THIS year and then write them down in specific terms. Don't just write down, "Exercise daily". Instead, write down, "Walk 1 mile a day" or "Complete work-out video 3 times a week".
I put the calendar where others can see it. It helps me see how many times I have worked out in a week or month. Plus if there isn't a sticker by Wednesday, I will get exercising. So I can get that sticker.
Instead of giving myself a (non-edible) reward for pounds lost, I give myself a reward for every week of healthy habits. This helps me stay motivated going week by week, and knowing that if I keep up a healthy lifestyle, the pounds will follow.
I am a very visual person and it helps me when I can see my progress. It can be discouraging if I don't see the scale move or my body change! Instead of using a traditional calendar to mark off my weeks of healthy eating and exercise, I paint my toenails. One toenail gorgeously decked out for every week of healthy habits. In ten weeks, my body has changed and I can start again! (Or reward myself with a full pedicure!)
Weight loss is like love.. You can go on with someone. But it is not easy. It is like a rose that can thorn you with it thorns. There are failures and of course a success will also be there. I will be moving on in the day if I will stare someone who did motivate me to be fit and healthy. That someone is my son.
You may have only lost one pound or perhaps even 1/2 a pound but when you think of it visually - 4 Sticks of Butter = 1 lb. Well, for one, that keeps me going !! Think about what it looks like or holding 4 sticks or squishing it in your hands. 4 sticks are a lot, now kiss them goodbye!
