Alway eat a protein with a carb.

While it is the most helpful thing to know about eating with diabetes, I am surprised how many people don't know this "secret." ALWAYS combine a carb with a protein at every meal or snack.

Take magical steps towards your miracle

I used to kick myself for what I should have eaten or should have done. Spark People has changed me. Now I imagine every positive step I take towards being healthy as magical.
-take my meds or do a blood sugar test
-choose a fiber rich snack
-go for a walk
-make a post on a Spark People thread
Some days I "run a marathon of steps" and some days are just one or two "baby steps" but they all mattter! They all add up. Look for an opportunity and run with it!

Boost Your Diet With Fiber & Lower Your Blood Sugar

Fiber Up
Dietary fiber fills you up (without weighing you down), keeps blood sugar levels in check, and helps prevent chronic diseases, including cancer and cardiovascular disease. walking does the heart good ...and all other body parts

I have discovered that walking has an immediate and positive affect on blood sugar. I proved that myself by testing my bs before and after a 30 minute walk. AND before taking meds.

It was shockingly better and to add to that great thing...my cholestrol also took a pleasant nose dive as well...

Protein

I always eat protein when I eat carbohydrates. For example, if I eat an apple I will also have a serving of low fat cheese. I have found this helps my blood sugars from going peaking when eating foods with higher sugar levels.

Planning meals & eating more frequently

It has really helped me to plan my meals in advance and pack food to being with me to work. I eat 4 - 6 smaller meals thoughout the day rather than just a big lunch and dinner. The benefits? More control with my bs & successful weightloss!
