4. Play a board game
Remember these? Maybe there are a dozen stashed in your closet, waiting to be dusted off. Monopoly probably should be saved until you have a few hours to spare, but quick kids’ games like Candy Land, Chutes & Ladders, Connect Four, or even Twister are always good for a smile.

5. Work up a sweat
Have some pent up frustrations? There’s no better way to get rid of them than by exercising. Pop in a workout tape, hop on your bike or grab your jump rope. You’ll be too busy working up a sweat to worry about what’s stressing you out. Picture the stress leaving your body through your pores.

6. Plan something fun
Is there a trip you want to take but never had time to get it together? Or a dinner you’ve always wanted to make? Now’s the time. Not only will you take your mind off things, but you’ll be spending time eagerly anticipating a great getaway or meal later. It’s a win-win situation.

7. Take a hot bath
A hot bath will initially give your body a kick, which in turn will give your mind a kick too – and then it’ll slow both down. Add bubbles and a few candles and you have the ultimate soothing atmosphere. A rubber ducky is optional.

  • I am a big fan of a nice bath...I try to do it at least once a week. It is my quiet time...I take a magazine to read and have good music on. It's very relaxing. Never thought about playing board games...that might be fun, I LOVE Candyland but probably haven't played it in at least 15 years (since our kid was little - he's an adult now).   • Meditation always worked well for me. The karate dummy in my picture was good exercise, but a few people I knew said that beating it up with a baseball bat was as good a stress reliever as they had ever used; I never needed it for that purpose, but some seemed to get a lot of good out of it. When I worked construction it helped relieve stress to turn a torch way up and blow through thick steel, making a pretty shower of sparks that looked like the 4th of July; that probably isn't available to most people though. - 11/25/2013 4:45:19 PM
  • I know I might be weird but my way to de stress is cleaning the house ! It makes me feel in control and organized then after its all clean and smelling fresh , I light a candle and drink a hot cup of coffee ! - 11/24/2013 2:27:17 PM
  • I like to walk long distance. I find that the first three miles I spend thinking about all of the things that are bothering me, and the next two or three miles thinking of ways to solve the problems.   • I find taking a break to read, even just for 15 minutes, helps. So does sipping a cool glass of water or a nice cup of tea (hot or iced, any kind). If those don't do the trick alone, especially if the stress is keeping me from falling asleep, watching something I know will make me laugh (like Fawlty Towers) is often useful. - 8/4/2013 12:30:28 PM

    Reading a book for an hour just before the supper time crunch really helps. Walking the dog, having a cup of herbal tea and taking a bath are also great stress relievers. - 7/24/2013 7:08:58 AM
  • I love the suggestions in the comments about hugging or petting an animal if you have one :) I also will stop and hug my favorite plushie (a stuffed balloon I made) for a moment, especially if I'm angry about something.
