A member of the dairy group, yogurt is an excellent
source of calcium and protein -- aim for 3-4 dairy servings/day!
CALCIUM, the building block of bones and teeth, is important in the prevention of osteoporosis - more common in women and those without adequate calcium in the diet.
An intake of dairy foods such as yogurt have also been associated with:
- more effective weight loss
- blood pressure control
- increased tolerance to lactose, the sugar in milk and milk products
WHAT IS YOGURT?
Yogurt is produced by culturing cream or milk with live and active cultures, or friendly bacteria. L. Bulgaricus, S. Thermophilus, and L. Acidophilus are all present in yogurt and help to keep the normal bacteria in the stomach healthy and may help to

maintain a healthy immune system. Look for this symbol on your yogurt containers to ensure live and active cultures are present!
IMPORTANT NOTE: Even though you may be finished growing, calcium still keeps bones strong …Dairy is key!
Baking tip: Substitute low-fat yogurt for part of the vegetable oil, sour cream, cream cheese, mayonnaise, or whipped cream in your recipes for a delicious, lower-fat product!

Cool Summer Honey-Almond Dip
1 Serving (2 tablespoons dip): Calories 40; Fat 2g (Saturated 0g); Carbohydrate 4g; Protein 2g

3 containers (6 ounces each) fat-free or light yogurt
2/3 cup chopped unblanched whole almonds
2 teaspoons honey
1/4 teaspoon almond extract
Fresh fruit, as desired
Makes 2 cups dip
Mix together and serve with your favorite fresh fruit or angel food cake- serve, dip & enjoy!
