  • Whole milk is 4% fat. Unless you're drinking it by the gallon, then it's not bad for you. It's certainly better than the enriched water that is skimmed milk, where they skim off the fat and then add stuff back (kind like enriched flour).

  • Nicely written article Kelly - more articles from you please! - 11/10/2010 5:12:51 AM
  • ... juices contain little more than artificial flavorings, corn syrup and water (aka empty calories). ...and the winner every time: water!
This sounds practically contradictory. Water is listed with syrup to make fruit drinks sound unhealthy, but then water is called the beverage of choice. - 9/7/2010 3:30:20 PM
  • ...whole milk is creamy and delicious, you can get the same health benefits with far fewer calories. ...BUT it's NOT "creamy"!! How do you repair beverage TEXTURE???? - 9/7/2010 3:27:44 PM
  • Dang that McDonalds coming out with Sweet Tea! I never use to drink it - got it once by mistake and after the initial "aaaccckkkk" I was like oh this is good. Just recently learned it's an additional 220 or 230 calories or something like that. Am working at eliminating it on a daily basis. - 9/3/2010 2:25:54 PM
  • Well, as with most foods, read the label. If something is touted as juice, it must be juice. If it contains corn syrup and sweeteners, it is called a fruit drink. - 9/3/2010 1:20:05 PM
  • WooHoo! I was glad to see that with each drink I was doing the right thing already! As it happens...my favorite drink IS water! - 6/10/2010 11:57:09 PM

I stopped drinking most sodas of all kinds back a few years ago and then 100% stopped the past year. As far as coffees, as a treat one of those fancy smancy ones are fine as long as it is not a super jumbo grande and maybe just once in a blue moon... I still enjoy tasting the actual coffee without covering it up with other flavors. The 2 best things I even bought years ago, an espresso maker and a Senseo coffee pod machine. With both I add a dash of almond milk and a drizzle of honey and that is it.
Also, I have a love affair with unsweet iced tea.... I only drink my teas unsweet be it hot or cold and living in the south, I get funny looks because they love their tea down here with a pound of sugar in it...yuck! - 5/14/2010 6:39:31 PM
  • As with everything, each individual has to figure out what works best for him/her. I'm not a soda drinker, I prepare my own flavored coffee, I always use artificial sweetener if I drink tea, I've rarely had whole milk in my nearly 45 years, I have almost always chosen 100% real juice over the others, and I keep water with me almost all the time. The hardest lesson I have ever had to learn about beverages though is that a serving of juice is only about 4 ounces, not 8. I have days when it seems like I just can't get enough orange juice - it can be REALLY tasty. - 5/5/2010 8:42:41 AM
  • While I did not frequent Starbucks as a rule, I would put half n half in my coffee with 2 tsp sugar. When I stopped adding the sugar, and switched to lower fat milks, I lost weight immediately just by making the change. - 5/4/2010 4:56:28 PM

I used to drink 3-4 diet sodas a day, so I was not looking forward to giving it up, but surprisingly, it was very easy for me. I started paying attention to how my body felt when I had diet soda. I felt SO bloated and uncomfortable, that I just didn't want it anymore. Now, I still have one every once in awhile, but I always regret it afterward :) If I really want something more than water, I reach for Crystal Light. - 1/8/2010 12:18:44 PM
  • I stopped drinking pop and switched to water. I do have 2 cups of coffee every morning. But, I much prefer drinking my water. I have about 1-2 pops per year. But, water has really been my choice for awhile. I love it!!! - 10/27/2009 11:06:48 AM
  • Trying so hard to get rid of the diet cola, but it is the one indulgence I still allow myself on occaision....my husband drinks two a day and I can't get him to even cut back.... - 10/2/2009 5:12:19 AM

Indeed, it was hard for me to give up diet colas. I especially like the Coke Zero. More than other diet sodas, I have read that this kind is very unhealthy. In fact, in one Spanish speaking country, I read a report that it is "banned" . . .
Is it true that ALL sodas, diet or not, are bad for the bones? - 9/30/2009 1:44:21 PM
