  • We make our own smoothies at home every morning for breakfast (just with coffee for me), with a bagel for my boys. 1 Banana, 1 cup frozen blueberries, 1 cup frozen mixed berries and/or 1/2 cup semi thawed strawberries, 1 whole apple (minus seeds), 1/2 cup of real fruit juice (flavour varies with our whim), whirl it up in the food processor and I'm off to suck and chew my smoothie. It's how I get fruit into my boys - 5 a day minimum fruit goes into theirs...they love it too.
  • I love water but I need flavor at times also. What are people's opinions on mio or crystal light? I dont drink alcohol or soda. I dont drink protein shakes or milkshakes or juice.
  • Yay - generally I drink the right stuff. Mostly water, sometimes juice, sometimes wine, and every so-often a green tea or a fruit infusion.

    One thing to note - Grapefruit can affect contraceptive pills, so if you're drinking that, make sure it doesn't have any unintended effects!
  • Helpful article but "danger drinks" sounds a bit sensational for "hidden calories". Antifreeze might be a danger drink. Drain cleaner.
    High-calorie ones may not be healthful but do we really need the hyperbole?
  • If only we good all get safe, clean drinking water like in the good old days. Now we have to buy good drinking water. What a travesty!
  • I make my sweet tea with just 3/4 cup of sugar per would that fall into the slightly sweetened category? considering a traditional sweet te recipe calls for THREE CUPS of sugar per gallon...
  • I do most of this. The sweet tea thing was hard at first until I realized I like it only at my fav hole in the wall soul food place. Only go there as a treat right now of course & to be honest the sweet tea is not the biggest danger there ;)

    I have read the same about the fat in milk but as I am getting plenty of fat in my diet, I stick to skim milk. I will say that the best dairy products I've ever had were in Ireland, many of the farm families we stayed with didn't paturize thier milk for personal consumption (& since they KNEW the conditions of the their yard...they didn't have to!) Best stuff ever!!
  • Also, if you're going to drink milk, the best kind of milk to get isn't organic, surprisingly; most organic milk is ultra-pasteurized. Look for milk that comes from pastured or "grass-fed" dairy cows, and the lower the temp of pasteurization, the better. Go for regular pasteurized if you can't go for low-temp. The label will tell you which kind it is.
  • If you are not going to drink whole milk, don't drink milk at all. Drinking it without the fat does absolutely no good. You need the fat to absorb the vitamins A and D. You also need the fat to assimilate the calcium. Studies have shown that the more fiber you eat, and the less fat, the less calcium you absorb. I don't think the increasing rates of osteoporosis and the increasing adherence to lowfat diets are a coincidence. If any part of whole milk is bad for you it'd be the lactose, because if you have a weight problem you're likely overdoing sugar in your diet. Or if you're allergic to whey or casein, those can be problems too. But for someone without tolerance issues, there's no reason to drink reduced-fat or skim. Cut your calories somewhere else--for instance, you don't need to eat grains at all, much less six servings a day, even if three of those are whole-grain servings. Cut back the unnecessary before you cut back on the beneficial.
  • I’m pretty good in regard to this.
    1. I don’t drink soda;
    2. I don’t put cream in my coffee and only get sugar-free flavors (i.e., sugar-free caramel, sugar-free vanilla) and these are also calorie free;
    3. I don’t drink alcohol;
    4. I don’t drink milkshakes;
    5. I don’t drink whole milk;
    6. I don’t drink sweet tea;
    7. and I don’t drink juice, unless I make it at home with my juicer and add no sugar.

    Beverages isn't my problem. Peanut butter is my weakness.
  • Water ~the BEST DRINK~so TRUE!And surprisingly,I've found~helps my asthma!
  • Whole milk is 4% fat. Unless you're drinking it by the gallon, then it's not bad for you. It's certainly better than the enriched water that is skimmed milk, where they skim off the fat and then add stuff back (kind like enriched flour).

  • ... juices contain little more than artificial flavorings, corn syrup and water (aka empty calories). ...and the winner every time: water!
    This sounds practically contradictory. Water is listed with syrup to make fruit drinks sound unhealthy, but then water is called the beverage of choice.
  • ...whole milk is creamy and delicious, you can get the same health benefits with far fewer calories. ...BUT it's NOT "creamy"!! How do you repair beverage TEXTURE????
