The Portion Distortion Guide

A List of Serving Sizes

  • A good reminder and reference. I know what sizes the examples are and I think I can still estimate and stay pretty close.

Never heard so much whining. Jeeze. Nobody said you had to follow these guidelines unless YOU choose to lose a few lbs. Look around next time you're at a party or restaurant buffet and see who have full plates and larger than average portions of food and then check their waistlines.

  • This article only shows how important it is to measure EVERYTHING!!! - 1/25/2013 9:21:53 AM
  • Ouch...Oh I know I need to know, but man oh man do i know why I have not been loosing! Deck of cards! whew...two dice!! Oh man, got to be strong, good thing I just read the 'calorie' article before this one, at least it shows large platefuls of food that are low in calories. A deck of cards! who eats like that! That is one very small steak....I would have to go vegetarian for a week to have the size of steak I want! What is that, lunch meat? 1 weiner? It is not like you can whip air into it to make it larger...hmm maybe with additives to burger, but still! I'm a meat and potatoes gal, I am begining to wonder how on earth I am going to do this. sigh...discouraging.

Nice overview, but I would have been more helped if you had provided us with the real measurements too. Healthy Diet Habits, habit 1, encourages me to buy a measuring set and I have just purchased one, but it lets me measure cups, tablespoons and teaspoons. - 10/25/2012 8:32:57 AM

i am still confussed about things like whipped toppings is a one tablespoon serving a whipped tablespoon which would be nothing but air or a liquid before as in canned toppings - 10/15/2012 10:30:23 AM

I think the portion size on the 1 bread =1/2 bagel is wrong. Bagels are very dense and I have read that 1 bagel can equal 5 slices of bread. - 9/10/2012 12:46:00 PM
  • I don't worry so much about portion sizes when I add vegetables or fruit (except avocado) to my soups or other foods. Veggies like kale, broccoli, mushrooms and garlic fight cancer and provide other health benefits, so the more the merrier. Also, it's damn near hard to overdo it on the healthy stuff.
I do, however, weigh the 1 oz of nuts I eat daily, along with any other calorically dense foods.
Too bad I hadn't figured this out years ago. - 8/23/2012 6:54:21 AM

This is so helpful! Definitely cuts down on the portion size confusion. - 7/28/2012 8:08:40 AM

This is sick. Now when I look at sports equipment I get hungry!
I find myself trying to envision just how much milk I could fit into a baseball, lol.

Thanks for the tips (seriously). :D - 7/24/2012 11:20:11 AM
  • these are small portion sizes and i don't think that i can live with such small portion sizes - 7/3/2012 8:38:48 AM

I am wondering when they suggest a portion the size of your fist,
does that mean "one thing" the size of your fist or one part of your meal.
I am wondering if I can have three "fist sized" items for one meal.

  • That is all good and well. But with such legally small proportions what do we do to not be hungry? Its absolutley crazy. I stay busy during the day. But in the evening I graze. If I eat such small portions I will really stuff my mouth. I need some good advice. Going to the message board. - 5/8/2012 4:16:08 PM
  • And maybe you can add a pinch of common sense.

  • Oh my! Such passive aggressive angst! Dice are those things you throw when you play yahtzee or back gammon. A baseball is a baseball. A softball is a softball. A billiard ball is the thing that rolls around on a pool table. A deck of cards is the thing you play pinocle with your grandma with. A hockey puck is that itty bitty thing that slides around the ice while the players in the OLYMPICS push it around with sticks. Surely you folks have seen ALL these things before and not at a casino. Sheesh. - 5/7/2012 6:50:01 PM
  • Wow, I had no idea that 'A PORTION' was so small. I figured that if I cut my portions to that of a childs portion that would do the trick. Shows how wrong I was. Thank you so much for the info. My partner will now look at me more strangely when I put REAL PORTIONS on my plate. Thanks again - 4/25/2012 5:55:58 AM
