  • Well, this article hits the mark in the sense that the power to eat - or not eat or buy - something is in the hands of the individual. And it should remain so.

Jibbie49 has it right on the money. We live in the United States, a country that has been built on a system that allows for free will. WE CHOOSE to buy products that we want. Nothing is more off-base than saying that junk food companies should be taxed because they make us buy their products. Don't like it? Don't buy it! A
The moment the U.S. starts to dictate what and how we eat, we begin to lose the freedom that has made our country so strong. Don't think that this is silly. Free will is an integral part of our lifestyle. Remember YOU, the individual, have the power to tell companies how you feel - with your wallet.
YES, we need to educate each other and ourselves about healthy choices and healthy lifestyles. That is crucial.
But, no one manipulates you unless you let him (or her). - 11/6/2008 11:42:53 AM
  • Love this article, Nicole - Thanks!!! It's amazing how little of the grocery store DH and I actually shop - pretty much just the produce section! And lately when we dine out, we SPLIT the burrito as big as our head. Just like I don't think everyone was really aware of all the different options in yesterdays elections, I worry that in today's busy world people also overlook healthy options that are right under their noses. - 11/5/2008 2:12:44 PM

  • I have written a couple of blogs dealing with my frustration over the horrible influence corporate media has on our lives. Fighting Corporate Control of my Body is a powerful motivator for me!

I think we all benefit when we can speak out to the *funding source* of such manipulations of our children, of ourselves! Boycotting, letters to the editor, speaking out as much as possible against such horrors!

It is so sad to see such a TREMENDOUS amount of MONEY funding such efforts and terribly unhealthy foods and eating habits when they could just as well fund and promote healthy, life-giving changes!

  • This is- by a LANDSLIDE- the most thoughtful, broad, and relevant article I have read at SP, ever. Well played, girls. - 11/4/2008 10:13:48 PM
  • What a great article! I feel empowered that my choices, even as one individual, may influence the current state of health in this country. Sometimes you feel that you don't have the power to change the way things are, but every "vote" can add up to change. Thank you for the reminder. - 11/4/2008 9:53:14 PM
  • The government doesn't need to TAX junk food and subsidize healthy food. We live in a Free Market Economy, and what people SELL is determined by what people BUY. We need to educate people about buying HEALTHY food. That would get more produced. IF you don't buy JUNK FOOD, they will not keep making it. - 11/4/2008 8:59:50 PM

The government should put a high sales tax on junk foods and use the money to subsidize healthy foods like whole wheat bread, fruits and vegetables, fish, olive oil, etc. If someone buys cola, they will pay double what they pay now, and if someone buys milk, they will pay half the price. People will make changes to save money and eat a healthier diet, the country's health care costs will go down, and even poor people will be able to afford healthy food. Lobby the new government! - 11/4/2008 7:13:11 AM
