  • Forcing oneself to choke down copious amounts of water can do just as much harm as not drinking enough. Too much water dilutes electrolytes in the blood, which are crucial for keeping the heart beating properly and muscle tissue contracting properly. Even Weight Watchers has stepped back from their mantra of 8 glasses of water a day.

    Remember, most things we eat contain water, including fruits, soups, vegetables, you name it. The scientific literature on the effects of drinking too much water is growing.

    Bottom line: if you are thirsty, drink. If you have been working up a sweat, drink. Just drink using common sense.

  • I did not realize that herbal tea was considered water. Glad to know I'm even better about drinking water than I thought I was. I don't especially care for ice cold water right out of the fridge so I keep a glass on the counter nearby and, every time I pass by, which is often during the course of a day, I drink some, or all, of it then fill it back up. It's room temperature so it doesn't cramp up my stomach. I also keep a bottle of water in my car and drink while I drive. After awhile, it becomes a habit -- a good habit. Another habit I've formed is to drink a glass of water when I first get up. I do drink coffee because I love coffee but no coffee before water! - 12/6/2016 7:52:09 AM
  • This is a very good article. I took a few "inspiring" notes from it. One thing I've done when I go out to eat is ask for water with lemon, and I'll add a sweetner to it and I have lemonade!!   • i hate plain water... but i'm down to one kidney and my nephrologist wants me to drink a certain amount. i dont always get there but I bought an infuser and love it (not that i use it every day) - putting in some berries, or pear with cinnamon, or mint/cucumber, makes it easier to get through at least one liter. i certainly try to limit my soda, at the very least only real sugar. coffee, juice (no hfcs), gatorade, tea... all adds up really to be the "8 cups" thing - 9/28/2016 11:35:14 PM

  • Actually, I have read more than once that the concept of drinking 64 ounces of water is taken out of context - there never was a mandate to drink plain water. Instead that 64 ounces of water per day, most of which were found in fruits and vegetables people were already eating, was recommended. In my case, it is necessary to drink milk because I am postmenopausal and require more calcium.

    I think SparkPeople should revisit this idea and change the amount of plain water one should consume if they agree with the more recent studies. - 9/4/2016 12:48:32 PM

  • I don't drink water because my body needs more of it - I drink water because it replaced other habits of shoving something (caloric and unnecessary) into my face.

    The big challenge, not addressed in this article, is the constant running to the bathroom. I simply can't drink this much water when I'm away from home, because it sends me to the bathroom more often than hourly, and I only get breaks at work ever 67 minutes; bathrooms are often farther apart than that when out shopping or wandering a park... - 7/4/2016 10:41:04 AM

  • National Institute of Health actually says 8 ounces of fluid.

  • There is no substantive research which validates the 64 ounces of water per day mantra so I am curious as to why this is a recurring "requirement" in the various forums. Bottled water is a rip off, is expensive and is ecological unsound considering the empty water bottles scattered all over the landscape. Purchase a stout reusable container and if you dislike your tap water filter it or flavour it to your taste. - 5/24/2016 1:05:44 PM
    I purchased a glass water infuser and place lemons, or fruits or cucumbers in the infuser and it gives my water a great taste, this way I find I drink more water :) - 5/24/2016 9:57:57 AM
