When smokers quit, within twenty minutes of smoking that last cigarette the body begins a series of changes.
At 20 minutes after quitting:
blood pressure decreases
pulse rate drops
body temperature of hands and feet increases
At 8 hours:
carbon monoxide level in blood drops to normal
oxygen level in blood increases to normal
At 24 hours:
chance of a heart attack decreases
At 48 hours:
nerve endings start regrowing
ability to smell and taste is enhanced
The first year after quitting:
At 2 weeks to 3 months:
circulation improves
walking becomes easier
lung function increases
1 to 9 months:
coughing, sinus congestion, fatigue, shortness of breath decreases
1 year:
excess risk of coronary heart disease is decreased to half that of a smoker
Long-term Benefits of Quitting
At 5 years:
from 5 to 15 years after quitting, stroke risk is reduced to that of people who have never smoked.
At 10 years:
risk of lung cancer drops to as little as one-half that of continuing smokers
risk of cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, kidney, and pancreas decreases
risk of ulcer decreases
At 15 years:
risk of coronary heart disease is now similar to that of people who have never smoked
risk of death returns to nearly the level of people who have never smoked

| You can do it! If I can do it anyone can. Keep sugar-free candies handy for sudden cravings. Also they say that a walk will take your mind off the cravings too. When I quit I'd also keep a pic of a nasty black lung posted on the fridge. It really does get easier as time goes by. If you can make it through a week...you're most likely in the clear. I smoked from the time I was 12 to almost 23. I couldn't believe it had been 11 years! I have been smoke-free except a couple slip up puffs (both occured while drinking) for more than nine months. I quit New Years eve cold turkey...pretty much just to show my dad that it could be done. Unfortunatly he only lasted a few days, because instead of all together quitting he only cut down...which most of the time never works. Over time he was right back to smoking more than a pack a day. He's been smoking over 35 years. It also helps that if anyone in the house still smokes that they step outside. My boyfriend still smokes and he goes out on the patio. He has been very supportive. I wish you luck. You can do it! I know you can. You will be helping yourself as well as the rest of your family in the long run. Somewhere on the internet it shows all the benefits of quitting smoking...even after only a few days. I'll see if I can find it to post.

yeah! for quitting, it has been 2 full days, but I don't even feel like smoking!!! I even went back to work this morning after 2 days off, and it's not that bad. I don't have any cigs on hand, I think that helps, I think the patch is really doing it's job, too.
When I feel like I want a cigarette, I drink a glass of water, and eat a certs mint. The cravings aren't even that bad, but I hear it is the seventh day that it starts to get bad. I can do this, I know I can. And I know you can too.

Congrats for deciding to quit! You might want to do a search of the SparkTeams b/c I think there are a few for those who have just quit or are trying to quit.
Good luck!

I woke up this a.m. and decided enough was enough...I am taking control of my fitness and diet, and so why are cigarretes running my day? So I walked my kids to school like normal, threw my cigs in the elementary school dumpster (can't dig them up that way) and took a side trip to Walgreen's to get the patch. I am not so sure I can do this without support, so I am wondering if anyone would like to do this with me? or maybe build a little group to keep each other in check, or to talk to?
