Well what I did was ...I threw out all the junk out of my house ,then I replaced it with all organic food It took me awhile but I eventually learned how to cook most things from scratch so it wasn't so expensive . That worked I stopped craving the junk infact as long as I kept that up I was doing great thast is when I lost mostr of my weight So From Jan , 2006 through the middle of may I was right on track I thought for sure I was going to be OK then I lost a few kids in my day care there perents moved out of state or they lost there jobs . but I was left with just 2 paying kids in my home day care . our financual situation was real bad so back to Aldis and the bulk shopping at Sams . After all you have to do what you have to do . So it was real hard there was temtation all over the place it didn't take much time before I had a real stressfull day and I benged then purged and after that I have been having a very hard time getting back into the swing of things . So I know that I need to get this under controll it is very scary . My triggers seem to be anything .from the grocery store . ugg very discuraging .

Hi Kari... Thanks so much for sharing with this message board. It's by opening up & then receiving mentoring from others that we get better. Right now you mention feeling "disassociated" from the bingeing & purging you. I'm wondering if you would share what helped you in your therapy & perhaps some tools your therapist taught you for managing this part of you. Notice that I'm suggesting that this is only a "part of you" & not all of you. You, yourself, have already come to this conclusion.

Hello my name is Kari ,I see there is an other person with the same name , I have been bengibg and purging for 24 years give or take one or two I have been to treatment centers and theripests I just resently have had a few months where it was controlable but then one stressful day and I would loose it . now I am back trying to stay on track it is hard I get complete funnel vission at times . It is almost like I am more than one person One day or even one whole week I will be focused on being healthy . then I get frusterated and I could benge and purge 5 or 6 times a day ( the days I do that I am a mental mess )it confuses me as to why I do this at this time I sit here and think how stupid of me . I know how it hurts me I know that it will kill me . I have done the journaling and about every thing I was asked to do during theripy and I did pritty good for 8 or 9 months . But now I am back to it again the scary thing is ..is that I really don't want to do this .

How to define a "binge" is a good question. To me & how I look at it with my patients, it is about the amount of food, but also the "compulsion" behind the eating. If you "emotionally check-in" before & during a true binge, you can feel the out of control energy pulling you. It can almost feel like an out of body experience or complete disassociation. After the food is "in hand" or has been eaten, there is usually a feeling of release. Sometimes the eating portion of the "binge experience" goes on for a longer time OR it may even re-instate itself later in the same day. So a person could actually stop ingesting & then go back to the cycle again. I think it's important to have compassion for anyone who feels this type of mind & body experience. It tends to destroy the self-image & the self-esteem, while putting the body under tremendous stress.

Hi ELIZRNto SparkPeople!

In your opinion what is the definition of a "binge."

I'm sure you've seen the threads that are on SparkPeople with the topic(s) binge in the sentence. It makes me angry that a lot of people who post consider a binge, 200 calories over their limit, a candy bar or 2, a couple of beers, a slice of cake or pizza and so on. (Separately, not all together.) I was going to add, and it's usually someone who weighs around 130, but at that weight I was bingeing.

For me a "typical" binge would be a whole cake, (or pie) a bag of chips, 12 tacos (no meat, I'm a vegetarian (I'm rolling my eyes:)) with added cheese and sour cream and a couple of super fries. I can't eat that way any more because I have a gallstone, so I don't eat fries or any high fat food now. But there are still plenty of foods to binge on.

Is it a matter of perspective or is there a definition?

Thanks!

Hi Kari...

If you are eating your meals on time & if they contain sufficient protein, fat & healthy carbs to hold your blood sugar, then you will not experience "physical hunger", no matter who is eating in front of you, nor if you see food that appeals to you. What you can experience, however, is behavioral/emotional hunger. It's very important to understand this, because the two hungers are managed quite differently.

Hello......my name is eLiz & I'm especially interested in discussing bingeing & sugar issues with this forum. I'm an RN, Clinical Medical Hypnotherapist & work in this field. I have been sugar-addicted since early childhood & have "disorderly eating" issues that I have to manage in order to "survive." I do have discussion groups for these subjects, but thought that this would be another place to do the same.
