Hi Jane,
I really like SB too. I lost all my carb cravings (popcorn, pretzels, bread, etc.) in Phase 1 which makes it so much easier to resist temptation (as someone else noted in the thread below). It is also very filling so you don't have to worry about feeling hungry or deprived. However, I found it much more powerful when SB is combined with SP. Combining the two got my weight loss moving after it had been stalled for months.
When I track the food intake (and I actually do weigh & measure a lot of things when I am at home), I can tell how I'm doing for the day. I guess I'm just a lousy estimator on some things because I kept underestimating my portions(they were almost always bigger than I thought) and caloric intake. After only a day or two, I got the hang of the tracking/measuring bit and feel so much happier & healthier. I also feel more confident because I can tell when my day is going off-track and get myself on track before I go over all the daily nutritional targets.
I just remarked to my husband tonight that this is the lowest I've weighed in probably 5 years (although I've still got another 10-20 to go). So hang in there.....experiment with using SB & SP (esp. the Nutrition Tracker) and see what works best for you.
Let me know how you make out or if you have any questions (or tips to share :)
Kathleen

Hey, I am new and am lost between sp and the south beach. The SB was good for me a while back when I wanted to lose some weight quickly. I like it because I did not have to worry about quantity. I am just getting started and found this thread. Jane

| South Beach has worked really well for me this year-I've lost 20 pounds on it. The great thing is, if you gain some back by eating badly for awhile, you can do salads and lean meat for couple of days and take it off again. I'm such a carb addict, after about the fourth day, you just stop thinking about biscuits & chips and cake! I've found that it gives me the ability to say, you know, that looks good, but losing another pound or so would feel alot better, and than that gives me momentum to keep going. Good luck with it! The stories in the book are very inspiring!

| I tried it about 2 years ago and didn't make it past Phase 1. I was so tired and felt bad. I didn't really lose any weight either, just water weight. I didn't really lose anything on atkins either so I guess carb restriction just is not right for me. I have lost more weight with SP - the tracking helps me keep an eye on my cals and that works best for me.

| I had seen some of the items at the stores here. The pizzas were actually recommended on the hungry girl site. I will have to try them.

| Thanks for the tip - I've never tried the SB food. Do you just get it at your regular grocery store or do you have to go to a health food or other specialty store?

| I'm not on the SB Diet but I buy their Harvest Wheat pizzas sometimes. They are tasty and low in calories.

| Right - and as south beach illustrates - all carbs are not created equally. If one has been eating primarily simple carbs (breaks down very quickly into sugar), complex carbs will be more difficult to digest initially. I also had the problem with not tracking calories, carbs, fat, etc......so I always thought I was doing better than I was.

I tried the south beach diet but it really flared my gerd. I was too miserable and I was still taking my Nexxium for the gerd. I do feel better if I watch my carbs a little but until I started tracking my food I did not realize how many carbs I did eat. Donna

| You said it, Donna. If you don't track calories, it comes back. I had tried south beach last year but ate too much of the healthy stuff and some of the weight came back. I'm feeling pretty empowered now between SBD & SP. Lost the carb cravings and can now fit into my size 8 clothes. I still want to lose another 10 lbs. by November. After that, I'm going to re-assess whether or not another 5-10 reduction is in order.

I know a lot of people who have tried the south beach diet and had good results, some long term but most short term.
Saying that ...I've tried the south beach diet twice and it was tough - expecially breakfast for me since I don't like eggs. Both times I stuck with it and both times I lost weight at stage 1, maintained or lost a little at stage 2 and gained the weight back at stage 3.
While on the diet I was very tired, didn't sleep well, and had problems staying regular. I just didn't feel good. As soon as I went off the diet I gained back the weight I lost plus extra.
I've done much better just using the sparks meal planning and tracking but I know everyone is different. If you decide to follow the plan then I'd suggest you track the calories ... cause if you eat above your calorie range you're going to gain weight.
Best of luck, Donna

| As I mentioned in another thread, I would highly recommend buying the SBD book if you don't already have it. It makes it a lot easier to stick with (esp. with the recipes in the back). I lost the initial tiredness and managed to stay on Phase 1 on 4 weeks this summer. Good luck and if you have any questions (or want any recipes or tips), let me know.

| I tried SB all the way through Phase I. I was tired - most of the time. I had problems slowly adding back the good carbs. I'm thinking about trying again because I did lose a lot the first 10 days or so.

| Diana - Does a combo of SBD and logging/tracking your food/liquid intake work for you? - Kathleen

| I also lost on phase one, but thought it too restrictive. I felt exhausted sometimes, and missed my whole wheat toast. The problem was on the second phase. I am not able to loose unless I keep track of my eating patterns. I agree with the above post..would end up eating more than i needed and regained the weight. diana

| I know what you mean about no fruit. I did find though that I was able to get beyond my weight plateau when I went to phase 1 and cut out fruits (esp. fruit juices which are really sugary) and sugary veggies like corn, carrots, sweet potatoes, etc. I have definitely lost all my carb cravings (e.g., popcorn, pretzels, chocolate, beer) and I'm now starting to add some of the fruits & veggies back in. But I need to log everything on SP, otherwise I tend to get "too much of a good thing"!

|
| I have tried it a couple of times, but Phase 1 proved to be a bit too restrictive for me. I understand their point about no fruit for the first two weeks, but that also seems a little ridiculous. I wasn't able, or maybe I should say willing, to do that. But I know quite a few people who have done the diet and it has worked great for them!!

| I have never been on the south beach diet, but I do enjoy their foods.

I have followed south beach before. And actually. . .I guess I still do--but not quite by name any more. Like the other poster said--only the first Phases are restrictive--by Phase 3 you are just eating sensibly with lots of whole grains, lean meats, and veggies.
My sister has lost 90 pounds on SB and really loves it! Good luck!

| No, it is really about watching and limiting your simple carbohydrate intake (e.g., white bread, sugar & the like). In Phase II of the diet, more complex carbs like whole-grain rice are ok (phase I is 2 weeks). It has a focus on high-quality, low-fat protein foods along with sufficient fruit & vegetable intake. That is why I call it "Atkins with Sanity" :)

| South Beach works really well. Not only have I lost 10 pounds on it, but I lost my carb cravings and have more energy. The first phase (2 weeks) is somewhat strict but it is very doable, as are the later phases. You can even find fast food that works on it (e..g, McDonald's grilled chicken season salad with low-fat vinegarette -- minus the croutons!). The Sout Beach Diet book has some terrific recipes in the back of it.

| I was wondering if anyone has tried the south beach diet, i hear it really works but i'm skepitcal?
