Five pound fluctuation, I had no idea. I still feel a little guilty because I know I made bad choices but I'm not going to beat myself up about it. This is a new week and last night I doubled both my strength and cardio plus I stayed away from dessert. I actually feel better this morning.

Any who, have a great day everyone!!!

I have no idea what japanese jeans are.... but if they fit when they wouldn't fit before, congratulations!

I just made a new goal for myself. Signed up for the "corporate challenge" which is a 3.5 mile race where companies form teams and compete against each other. Currently about 2.5 is my maximum run in one shot (with no walking breaks) so I'll need to work up to that. The race is on June 15th, so I have just under a month to get ready. Not sure if any of you are runners, but does anyone have a good suggestion on how to build up distance? I just can't seem to get past my current 2.5!! I don't care so much about speed, I just want to be able to finish it without taking a walking break.

housework also burns decent calories!

i had an ok day, it was the day off work but i still cycled in to get the exercise, then cycled round town a bit. didn;t go to the gym but there's always tomorrow. and score! i fit into a pair of womens japanese jeans! true they;re all but impossible to do up, and they bulge unsightly-like, but the last time i tried i couldn't get them over my thigh! happy happy.

The sun is out for the second day in a row!!!

I was very bad yesterday- skipped the gym completely. I just was not up for it and decided to get housework done instead. I did stay within my calorie range though, so I don't feel THAT guilty. Definitely hitting it hard tonight though!

"Offical" weigh in is tonight....wish me luck!

Wildlilpony- Don't let the 3 pounds get you down. I was reading an article the other day that said your weight can fluctuate day to day by as much as FIVE POUNDS! Today is a new day!

Andi, that's just the kind of challenge I was thinking of. I think that it's not good to compete with each other - we are not all at the same fitness level, for one thing. We should compete with ourselves - do for example 30 minutes more cardio than usually. My personal challenge for this weekend: 4 hours walking and 2 hours Denise Austine Powerzone DVD. Just testing, what's the impact of more exercise to weight loss.

Hello, the cardio challenge sounds good count me in.

Mczetty, I think at this point I'd rather have the rain. Maybe we can trade?

I didn't do so good this week, up 3lbs. But I'm not going to let it keep me down. I just need to work harder at meeting my goals.

i'm in for that challenge, i have to work saturday so it's gonna be exrta pleasing if i make it!

Happy Wednesday!

How about a cardio challenge for this weekend, then? I don't think we need to compete with each other, but for sure with ourselves! Decide how many cals over and above what you are already scheduled for for the weekend that you would like to achieve, and then go for it! Even walking leisurely adds up - and its sometimes more fun! :)

How does that sound to everyone?

I'm so glad to see everyone is doing well for the most part this week. I think as long as we continue to focus on all the things we do RIGHT, nothing can stop us!

I'm up in New England and we have had nothing but rain for 2 weeks straight.... today is the first day the sun is out and it might hit 70!!! I would love to be in 100 degree weather right now. The hotter the better for me! :)

Did good yesterday for the most part. Stayed within my calorie range, but did have a couple of gummy bears. Went to the gym and ran, but only for 1.5 miles. Did weight training as well.

Hoping for a little more running today. Kind of lazy yesterday with only the 1.5 miles....

Andi- glad you're feeling better! Take it easy for a few more days before you get back into it full swing. You don't want to relapse.

I definitely need something to keep me going this weekend. I've got a birthday party Friday night, a housewarming Saturday night, and I'm working Sat & Sun during the day. If I can make it to the gym once for a half hour I'll be happy!!

I like the reward jar idea, too. If not earlier, we'll need it, when we reach our goal and it'll be time for seriour shoping spree. :D I can't wait that time come.

Andi, I hope you'll like »snowballs«. I hope you feel better today. Give your body time to heal and then start exercising. I'm for weekend challenge, too. What should we do? Some cardio or workout challenge? I need something like this ... This week I don't have much time for exercising and I miss it a lot!!!

Blue, don't give up in laziness!!! You want to exercise, because you want to reach your goals – no exercise, no reached goals! You don't want that, right?!

Lilpony, I sympthize with you. I can't function right, when temperatures are high. Hope that this summer in our country won't be so hot. Last year was just ok.

Bistrobrit, I like to log in too. It really makes easier to stick with plan if you have to report someone, what were you doing throught the day to promote your weight loss.

Hi all. Just posting for how I did today and catching up with everyone.

Calories - over, but all of it was at least healthy.
Exercise - 20 min. stepping. It's a new program, and I am getting so lost. LOL. Two left feet.
Veggies/Fruit - Four.
$1.25 in reward jar.

9 miles is huge brit. You should be proud. I too think logging in helps. WTG Wildlil. I would be sweltering in that heat as well. Andi let yourself heal and get better. I would love to catch the flu right now. Give me a headstart on shrinking the old tummy.
Thanks everyone. Goodnight.

Hello all,

I havn't posted for a couple of days. Sunday was a good day for me. I stayed within my calories, ran 9 miles and then rewarded myself by spending the rest of the day by the pool. Monday and Tuesday have not been so good. Work has been crazy, so I have not been tracking what I have been eating, and havn't made it to the gym either day. I think that logging in everyday really makes a difference for me.

I love the idea of a reward jar, I will just have to hide it from my husband.

Hello all,

I have had a difficult week so far. We have been running non-stop. Every day has been something, Mother's Day, car shopping, then tonight my oldest played in a district wide music concert. Add to that we are experiencing 10 degrees above normal heat during the day(today 99, low 100's the rest of the week) makes it difficult to go outside.

Sorry for the whinning. I'm not usually like that but it's 9:30pm and it's still 86!

I am eating well and drinking more than 8 glasses of water, I am even managing to get in the 30 minutes of cardio. But I haven't done any other exercises this week. Tomorrow is weigh in, I guess I'll see if I am really sweating my butt off!

Good night and God speed.

ooh, the reward jar thing - i like it!
andi, hope you are feeling better! and even though it was because you were sick, you should be happy with the 3lbs weight loss, that should be a good boost for you!
welcome cindy, you have indeed come to the right place!

so far this week i've managed to do the exercise i am supposed to be doing - let's hope it stays this way, though i can feel a lazy stage coming on! must...fight...the lazy...stage!

Hi all!

I was so sick over the weekend and just got caught up on posts now. I lost 3 lbs since last week, but only because I was sick. At least I was able to have a couple of days away from my bad snacking habits to start over again. It's so much easier to listen to my body again.

Thanks for the recipe, Metka. I can't wait to try it!

I love the reward jar - just think of how much money we could stash away! That's a great idea!

My plans for the week are to stick to 1200-1400 cals per day, although I might be a bit low as I get my stomach back. It was still hard to eat today, even though I am pretty much over the flu. Even water makes my tummy queasy.
Other goals - drink my 8 glasses of water/day
Do my 40 mins cardio per day, and 2 days of weights this week, but only once my energy is back up. That may have to be amended based on how I feel tomorrow!

Let's make a weekend challenge - something to keep us motivated to keep going all weekend long. Any ideas on this one?!

Glad to be back!
Andi

P.S. the jicama is good, but I'm cooking it next time I eat it first! It's kinda chewy! :)

Great ideas everyone. I like the manicure and pedicure idea. Perhaps, I will create a reward jar, and everyday that stay within my calories I will put in a quarter. Same thing with exercise and as an extra incentive (as I am having trouble with the veggie/fruit thing) for every fruit or veggie. I can save up and buy new nailpolish or something to give myself a pedicure or mani and then when I have enough, go to the spa. I really like this idea.
Thanks again.

My motivation for exercise is knowledge that if I'm not exercising, I won't lose weight. I don't want to be stuck and just prolong my obesity, but I want to lose weight steadily. Second motivator, since I exercise, I don't have problems with swollen legs (they really hurt me).

Welcome Cindy! You've definitely come to the right place for encouragement!

I too find myself having trouble motivating for the gym. Usually I just try and tell myself how good I'll feel after I go (which is true- I always feel great!). Since I've joined Spark people I just make it a point to come on every day and report my progress. That way if I skip a day at the gym I know I'll feel guilty the next day when I have to tell everyone! :)

Another general motivator I have is that I write my weight on a white board on my refrigerator. That way I see it every day- keeps me on track!

You can do it!

Hi Folks -- I'm new to posting so this may be randomly put together.

I've got 50 pounds to lose. I'd like to have 10 pounds off by June 10, but 5 would be fine at this rate!

I'm working with a trainer 3x weekly and try to get to circuit training at least 2x. That's my dilemma. I love my trainer and our sessions. I could care less about dragging myself off to circuit training. When I'm there, it's great. When I'm not I can forget that I go. Oh well. Today is the first day of a new week with circuit training.

My challenge to me is to get my car (and myself) down to that gym! Help me out with encouragement.

Thanks. Cindy

I don't want to reward myself with food anymore. Because I know that in the past, when I started eating all that "mjami" food, I couldn't stop or I eat too much. It's not worth it. That kind of life brought me where I am now. I'd rather buy myself things I need or want or go to spa or do manicure/pedicure ...

Foofalina, I decided food wasn't going to work for me as a reward. Mainly because I gained 25lbs after I quit smoking 2 years ago. Last week the girls in my office and I went to the salon and had manicures and pedicures. That was a good moral booster as well. Every one told me how much better I am starting to look. Not because I am loosing weight but because I am smiling more and the color in my face is coming back. So find something you haven't done for yourself and try that.

Had a good day yesterday. Stayed in my calorie range (on the low end!) and did 40 minutes running/walking (3.5 miles) and about a half hour strength training.

My goal is to be down 2.5 pounds by Wednesday of this week (compared to last Wednesday), so we'll see how that goes....

I still sometimes reward myself with food. But it will be something that I can control. Like, I will go to the 7-11 and get ONE ice cream bar. That way I have a treat but I can't eat more than that! Other than that, sometimes I will treat myself to new clothes (especially if it's like BLUE said and it's because your old clothes are too big!). But there are other ways too. Go see a movie you've been dying to see. Or buy yourself a book you've been wanting. There are lots of ways- just find something that makes you happy and make that your reward!

um, the rewards i have used so far include a new gym t-shirt (though i never actually got around to buying it), some new fish for my tank and allowing myself some diet soda (one thing i actively avoid otherwise since starting spark). this week my reward will be going shopping to see what my trouser size is now that mine are starting to get a bit loose, and this gives me an extra goal - to drop another size by summer, e.g.

Thanks so much blue. I do the tupperware thing as well. And I have started to pre-measure my food now, as I really want to be serious about this and not sabotage myself.
I quit smoking a little over a year ago. Prior to quitting, I lost 30 pounds, so that I could not use weight as a reason to smoke again. Now, I have gained that back and 5 more.
I personally think that losing weight is similar to quitting smoking. You make a decision to change the way that you live and reprogram or retrain yourself.
The problem I have been running into is that I rewarded myself with food when quitting. I need to find a new reward system. Any thoughts?
Thanks for all the support everyone.

Foofalina - found this in a spark article, the second paragraph especially good right now! :)

"Muscle Power. Fat tissue lowers the rate at which one burns calories, because fat tissue requires less oxygen and is very inactive. On the other hand, muscle is a more physically and metabolically active tissue. It therefore burns more calories than fat. Through exercise, especially strength and resistance exercise, you can decrease the amount of fat in your body and increase the amount of muscle. This will then help you burn more calories each and every day, even when youfre not exercising.

Muscle also weighs more than fat. Near the beginning of your program, you may gain some weight after strength exercising. This is perfectly normal. As the composition of your body changes from fat to muscle, the muscle will help burn off that remaining fat at a faster rate, uncovering your lean, fit muscles."

foofalina, could some of the gain be muscle mass aswell? especially as yu've only really just started the diet, sometimes it takes a while to get going, but stick with it, i'm sure you'll start seeing a loss soon!

sunday and monday was a bit of a muck up, have had a bit of stress and a huge craving for sweets, biscuits, chocolate - gave in to all three. i find once i've mucked up in one area it so so easily spreads to others. attempting to repair that today and get back on track!

i'm a fan of small plates and bowls too, even with a slightly larger meal cos with a few bowls it really feels like you're eating a lot. i find that tiny tupperware containers for work help too, i split my meal into 2 or 3 of those and it makes it feel like i'm eating more!
MCZETTY
5/15/06 10:55 A

Smaller plates definitely help. You can't fit as much food on them. And it makes you have to think about the fact that you're getting a second helping!

And don't worry about the 3 pounds. My weight does that sometimes too. Is it "that time" for you? Because that definitely makes me heavier for a couple days!

Had a good healthy lunch- salad and soup! The person I was with had french fries and I managed to eat NONE!

Oh, and just wanted to share this. I went to the asian market near my house and bought a few of the bowls they use to eat from. They are small and hold about a cup and a half of food. I am going to use those to eat from. Yesterday I weighed out the food (oz etc) and used the bowls. I would have been within my goal range (less than 1400), if it hadn't been for the wine. Really excited about using these bowls. I think it will help with satisfaction and portions size. Just a thought.
