Thanks for the tip poifect! I will give it a try. Tampamom sounds like you are doing great with your quit, WTG!!!
I have been giving it a lot of thought and I have found that when I smoke it isn't because I need or even want it, it is just a habit. I have put a note on the cupboard door where the smokes are and here at the computer and I have written: Cigarettes will not control my life today! And also: Think!!! Do you really NEED that smoke?!?!? It has helped me stop and rethink when I want to go reaching for the smoke.

| preemiemom try not smoking the whole cigarette I started stapping half way through when i cut back then webnt down in numbers put the cigarette out half way through do not relight it you are actually decreasing the amount of nicotine that you are getting because the filter works better the first half so see if this may help you

ya know what's weird though? I want a cig less now that I am not wearing the patch, as opposed to when I was. I forgot it on Sat, and have just kept it off. I feel better now. Strange.

I was smoking like 30 a day before I chose my quit date. I have now got it cut in half at 15 a day. Except for today that is lol I think I have smoked close to my normal amount today but it has been a rough day. My strategy has been to cut back a little more every few days until my quit. And journaling when and why I smoke. My hardset smoke to give up is going to be my relax after supper smoke, thinking hard on ideas to do after supper to replace it and still relax.

Day 3 of my cutback, 12 days to my quit. Having a rough time of it today. That Nicodemon has a nasty hold on me today. stress has been a big trigger today, I'm going to be more conscious of my smoking for the rest of the day and start fresh tomorrow. I will say I am finding the taste of a smoke more and more disgusting though. I was going to go cold turkey but I'm starting to have serious thoughts about trying the patches or the gum. Wondering if it may help since I am surrounded by smokers, at the very least it may help keep me from becoming so sick to my stomach during the withdrawal.

I started a thread called inspirational quotes under the motivational part on here. If you have any, come post! I want to have something we can look at if need be, plus, posting quotes is NOT EATING (or smoking!) LOL

Hi Everyone!
I saw this thread and just had to pop in and wish you all the very best at quitting smoking and getting healthier. I was a two pack a day smoker when I finally quit, and now I work with tobacco prevention and cessation services.
I wanted to be sure to let you all know of some free and very effective tools. Every state now has a "quitline" where you can call and talk with a trained quit coach. The number is 1-800-QUIT-NOW and based on where you're calling from, you'll be automatically routed to your state's quitline.
Every state's level of services are different. Some offer what we call "one good call" and referral to community resources. Others offer a more intensive program where you can have the quit coach call you back up to three or four times through your quit process. And in our state, we even offer free patches or gum to people who are totally uninsured and are in the more intensive program.
It's all done by phone, so you can do it in your pj's and on your own schedule. It's proven to be very effective.
Also, there's a great website, www.quitnet.com where you can get a lot of help, like here on sparkpeople.
And don't forget to talk to your doctor because there are many good pharmacy aids now and many health plans are starting to cover this treatment (because it is proven to be so effective). Especially if you're worried about gaining weight as a result of quitting, you might want to ask your doc for Zyban (also known as Wellbutrin or Bupropion SR). It is an antidepressant and works as well or better than the nicotine replacement products, but it prevents you from gaining weight.
Anyway - don't rule out these helps. There is more effective help available now than ever before.
I wish you health and happiness!!

| Hi all..yes i agree..don't let one slip bring you back to a whole pack. Big difference. I slipped and had one last year..and it was weird. I thought about what triggered it..and knew it was anger. So..wow..i thought..now that is a bit crazy..i am mad..so why not smoke..lol..cause it will hurt who? me!! that is when i made the connection..the emotional connection between me feeling upset..angry..anxious..uneasy..all the bad feelings were connected to this habit..and not one..good feeling!!! Besides that..i got sick from that one smoke..started coughing again and my sinuses clogged up. So..now..when i am mad..or upset..i vent it out..good..to a good friend..or write it down..and take a long walk..or a really good hard exercise..and always seem to feel better later..minus the negative impact smoking did for me back when:-) ps..a piece of pizza is not such a bad thing:-) we do seem to beat ourselves up..way better than others do it to us:-) diana

Hey Tampa don't beat yourself up just keep at it. Don't let a slip turn into a crisis. Preemie I wish I had done that. Your off to a good start!! WOO HOO, I didn't eat the house yet today. I think I might finally have my snacking under control again. Yipee.

Good Afternoon everyone.
I'm in my second day of cutting back and it is going good so far. 13 days to my quit!!! I am journaling like crazy and noting my triggers. So far it's a combo of boredom, habit, DH smoking near me and stress. I have brought it up to DH that it would be most helpful for me if on my quit day he would begin smoking away from me preferably outside. He most likely will cooperate for me he is pretty sweet that way.

| Hi again:-) I had all kinds of weird symptons after quitting. I started to cough a lot, but that was from my lungs starting to heal. I don't recall them hurting, but i had headaches and body aches too. I still have a minor wheeze from so many years of smoking, but the doc thinks there is no real damage..i hope..but I still do not have the same endurance to aerobic exercise as i did when i was younger. I suspect the smoking has done that..but i keep trying a bit harder to imporve. You are a lot younger..so you have the chance to go right back to where you were before you smoked..that is why it is so wonderful you are doing it now. keep up the great work!! diana

| Thanks Diana. I actually have 4 boys and a really big one (husband) who I love dearly. They are definatly my inspiration. I want to be able to travel and be active with my husband when we're older. Don't want a smokers cough following me around. Congrats on your quit too Diana. Thats awesome. You must be really proud of yourself. I know I'm proud of myself. Hey when you quit did your lungs hurt?

| Hi, just look at your baby's picture and realize you will buy her many more years to spend with her and her kids..your grand kids:-) For every reason you try and tell yourself why it is ok to keep the habit, there are hundred reasons why they are not valid. I am not a judger..i even go out and sit with co-workers who still smoke..but every time they take a big suck of smoke into their lungs..i move aside and take in fresh air. (I don't get too close) Their smoking does not bother me..it actually gives me more reason to stay where i am now. One friend comes back into the kitchen we work in..and smells just like an ash tray..and then i understand..wow..that is exactly what i smelled like too:-) Give you baby the choice of life..yours:-) diana

| Hey Lux. It's hard. But we are stronger then our addiction, and we will not give in to junkie thinking. When I'm craving one thing I've heard helps me....Nicodemon is starving, he wants you to feed him so he can be in charge again. Don't let that happen. The longer you starve nicodemon the weaker he'll be. Stay strong!!! Have you gained much since you quit?

Hi preemiemommy, Will your husband agree to smoke outside? Away from you? Can you mabey explain to the others that your quittting and although yo love them your going to have to stay away from them for a few days? Once your over the withdrawls it might not be so hard to be around smoking. My advice to you is to really make a quit plan. Check out some quit smoking sites. Really educate yourself so that when your in the middle of a painful craving you'll be able to deal with it. My list of reasons why I quit helped to. Sending you hugs. Ang One week, five days, 1 hour, 55 minutes and 11 seconds. 217 cigarettes not smoked, saving $108.72. Life saved: 18 hours, 5 minutes.

I threw them down on January 1 of this year. Haven't had one since, but I SURE THE HELL WANT ONE NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! ARRRGGGHHHHHH.
So what, I have will power and when I do break down to want one (including eating chocolate), I hope none of my friends are in the way, because it's gonna be "postal" I'm sure.

They tell me the "wanting one" never goes away, its just something you have to suck up and deal with.

Well today is cut back day and so far so good. I haven't even had one yet!!! although DH was sitting 3 feet away from me with one going and it DID make me crazy lol I dealt with it by going and pushing out 10 minutes on the stationary bike. I felt lots better afterwards not to mention quitting may mean I get loads of cardio that can only be a good thing. I can actually take a deep breath!!!
Ontario is making noise about a provincewide smoking ban that would ban all smoking in public places. The price of a namebrand pack of smokes around here is $9.15 which is crazy but most people around here go to the Indian Reserve where they sell cartons in Ziploc Bags for $15. I have mixed feelings about the smoking ban but I'm sure once I quit I'll be glad to not be surrounded by it when I go out.

| Hi again, in Ct they passed the law no smoking in public places. At first I was upset and angry, but you know what? I really like it now. I had to quit the Elks club, because private clubs still allow the smoking. If I now am in a smoke filled area, I actually get sick. Guess I didn't realize I was becoming alergic to all the stuff they put in smokes..especally the carbon dioxide that was making my heart race. Worse thing about smoking is how it can make our kids sick too. I never understood as a young mom my smoking was making my kids get so many colds and lung problems. My son stopped ten years ago..now he is so proud of his Mom for stopping too. Keep up the good work..really..you can do this!! for your children! diana

I have decided that I am going to try quitting. I just imagine what I'll be facing since I live with a smoker and my SIL across the road is a smoker and my MIL is a proverbial chimney LOL and I'm around all 3 almost daily and sometimes all 3 at the same time(YIKES). I am quite nervous and I don't plan on telling anyone outside of DH. My motivations are first my daughter, she was a 26 week preemie and has lung issues stemming from her prematurity. Her health is a big concern and I also want to stick around to watch her grow up and be around to see my grandchildren when that time comes.(Won't be for a long while since my daughter is only 4 years old lol). My second motivation is the money(awful ain't I????), I am planning on salting away the money I spend on bags of smokes every month which totals about 60 bucks and save for a new PC. My other big concern is nausea, last time I tried to quit I had problems with becoming very sick to my stomach and the only way to knock it was to have that smoke. The *****iness is a normal thing for me so no one should bat an eye about that!!! I'm going to start cutting back tomorrow just to get my system used to things in hopes that it may curb the nauseous feelings when I quit for good. I have half a cartons worth left and once they are gone thats it!!!
Tampa GL2U on the wisdom teeth, had mine done all 4 at once about 9 years ago, still glad they knocked me out for that!!!

| Ha Ha Your a brave woman Tampa! I'm staying far away from alcohol until I'm stronger. 3 things are helping me. Education, Attitude, and Support. I belong to a quitters forumly at forums.about.com. When I get a kick but craving I post there until it goes away. Everyone there will hold your hand and talk you out of having that smoke. Also you have to believe that by quitting you are giving yourself a gift, not depriving yourself. Never feel sorry for yourself, you are doing something wonderful for you. Its also great motivation to read all about what smoking does to you. What to look forward to during withdrawls, how to deal with withdrawls. You can find great info at whyquit.com. Hope that helps and good luck. Remeber we're always here for you too. If your having a craving come here and post. You can't smoke if your to busy posting!!!

Tampamom, Congrats your doing awsome! Just remember they call the first week hell week and the second heck week. That first week is awful. I'm into my second week now and it really is getting better. Your first week, don't focus on anything but your quit. If those fries will give ya some sort of gratification well I say go for it!!!! I gained 4 pounds my first week and a half. But I'm feeling more like myself this week so I'm going to hop on the weight loss wagon again. I know it won't take long to get rid of 4 pounds. You can do this!!!!
