The only essentials are a swim suit and goggles to protect you eyes from chlorine. Its a pretty low cost sport on the equipment side.

I also like ear plugs to keep from having water in my ears all day. I have sandals to walk to/from the pool to keep from slipping on the pool tile (more a statement of my grace and ability to walk than anything else). A lot of women also like swim caps. They keep your hair out of your face.

Hey Yall!
I love to swim! I am thinking about starting early in the a.m. about 5:30 or so. Coach Joe, Question... Do you think that we would burn more calories when swimming in the morning versus later in the day? I wonder about the calorie expenditure in the starvation mode. What do you think? I know it would be better than my morning Java to wake up to cool water instead of caffeine!
Just wondering....

Thanks for your input

I find that swimming helps to burn the calories, and also helps you to lose the weight.

They make a swiming watch that actually counts your laps, times them and times intervals.

I use to use earplugs, and swimming cap for my long hair, but now I get away with just goggles. I feel comfortable having only one object to worry about. I don't seem to have a problem with my ears as long as I clean them out right away and the swimming cap isn't necessary if I hurry and wash my hair. A pony tail works great to keep the hair out of my view. I love not having to put everything on before jumping in. I also like to use a kick board and a bowie to lift my legs when I want to work on my arms.
A clock or stop watch comes in handy.
A way to remember counting laps is saying it out loud or in a whisper each time I get to the end. I wish there was a better technique to remember what lap I was on. I get frustrated when I lose count. Any Ideas out there? Btw, I haven't been swimming in almost a year! I didn't like swimming until after I learned how to swim (as an adult) I was afraid of water as a kid and conquered it by having a patient Masters Swim Coach!

Coach Jen encouraged me to learn to swim and swim laps as an alternative due to some foot injuries. What gear is essential for this?

I try and go swimming at least once a week, and do a least 8 lenghts, will that help me with my weight lost?

Hi there!
Don't know if this thread has died, but I'll write anyway. I'm just starting a swimming program now that "winter's" coming here in Minnesota. I'm curious about how much and what you all do. Also, I've got a wacky question---I'll be swimming early in the morning before work, but does anyone have any good advice on what to do with my wet swimsuit all day? I can roll it up in my towel, but I know it won't dry being in my cold car all day, and there will be some days where I'm not getting home til way late. I don't want it to get "moldy" and I don't know if putting it in a plastic bag is a good idea, though it would keep my other workout stuff from getting wet. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!!

Good to hear from you Kelly. I am fortunate that I can swim in the indoor pool at my fitness club so I don't worry too much about the weather. Kaylene

Sorry guys! I went on vacation and then came back to work and about a million projects. I have been keeping up on my swimming though. 2-4 times a week for about 30 minutes. The weather will permit me to swim for at least another month. How about you 2?

Hey all. I swam for 120 minutes on Saturday. Took my boys with me. I got them masks and snorkels so they had a blast while I swam laps.

Have a great day. Kaylene

Ahhh shoot, I wish I would have seen your post yesterday... I would have given you updates!

I watched about 30 minutes. Fortunately it was during both times they scored.

I hope you have a good weekend!

Thanks Coach Joe. My daughter is getting a little better each day.

I wish I could be at home watching that soccer match. Unfortunately, I'm stuck at work with no tv so I'll have to listen to the radio and see if they give updates on the game.

Have a great day. Kaylene

Kaylene... wow, what a great day of fitness... good for you!!! I hope your daughter is feeling better!

What a great way to put it... "head clearing swim"... I feel the same way... there is just something about swimming that is different from all other exercise I've experienced.

I woke up early this morning and went to the Y and swam for 40 minutes... woohoo!

Have a good day!
"Coach" Joe

p.s. I don't know if you two are soccer fans, but the woman's world cup team is playing for the gold medal in about 10 minutes... I've been looking forward to it all day.

Just checking in. Yes, Coach Joe, she is definitely hurting. I wish I could take the pain away from her. Hopefully soon she will start improving. It has hit her hard.

My husband came home after going to the gym and stayed with her so I could go swim laps for 50 minutes this evening. I had done upper body, lower body, and core exercises at home while she was sleeping for 50 minutes too.

Have a great night and good job on your workouts Kelly and Coach Joe. Keep it up. Kaylene

Great job Kelly. Keep it up.

I wasn't able to get to the gym this weekend. My daughter had all 4 impacted wisdom teeth out and I didn't dare leave her.

Have a good night. Kaylene

Kaylene and Coach Joe

I spent 20 minutes doing laps last night. I think I like it better than walking. I just might start spending more time in the pool. Have a great swim!

Coach Joe, that sounds like a great challenge. I've really been enjoying swimming laps the last several weeks and find that my endurance is improving. I've been doing laps several times a week the last couple of weeks while nursing an eye injury I got playing racquetball. Swimming laps is an approved exercise by my eye doctor. Keep us updated on your progress and I will keep you updated as well. Kaylene

Hi Everyone

I find myself always taking swimming for granted during the summer, until around now (mid august)... I feel so much better after swimming laps, even if it's just for 15 minutes. My new goal is to swim laps 2x a week for the rest of the summer... if anyone is interested in joining me or just helping me I would love to have some help with my motivation and staying on track.

"Coach" Joe
