Sue, don't be worried bout the water, muscles need hydrated while being worked. Have fun, can't wait to hear how it goes. Michelle, awesome choice of xmas presents can relate to buying your own. I've thought bout joining there too just not sure am ready to be seen in public at my size in exercise wear. Let me know how it goes. Nice to have your daughter going with you. Misty, wow thats a lot of steps, I admire your strength and determination. Walked my tread last night during CSI for another three miles. Think I'm to the outskirts of Colorado Springs now. Going to try and get a chain for my bike this weekend. My coach is off to spend the weekend with his father so going to be a hard one for me. Hopes everyone has a good friday. Becky Jo

Sandra, I just love the little info you post about the different places you are visiting. I told my hubby about the Rockerfeller Center Tree origins. He loves little bits of info like that.
I need to go back and tally up what few miles I have traveled. My ankle is still swollen but I can hobble around if I don't put a lot of pressure and keep it straight when I walk. I'm thinking I might even be able to pedal a little by tomorrow. I think the sprain is high enough that the recovery is going to be fairly quick.
Sue, how great to have access to a personal trainer without having to pay for it.
Michelle, good for you getting the gym membership. I used to have one like 20 years ago. One of the "lady" gyms. I liked it until I had kids. Then I didn't have time to go and let it lapse (not to mention they went out of business).

Misty, how long does it take you to climb that much at a time? I have only been climbing about 500 steps at a time (10 minutes). I have bad knees, so it hurts to do much more of that at a time. I've only climbed a TOTAL of 5,000 steps since I started. You've climbed more than that in one sitting!!
I'm almost half way up that service staircase!! (11,674 steps)
Here's some stats again, for all you fellow climbers: 354 - Statue of Liberty 1576 - Empire State Building 1789 - Eiffel Tower 1860 - Chrystler Building 2109 - Sears Tower 11,674 - Service Staircase for the Neisenbahn Funicular Railway (Switzerland)

That's an awesome benefit!! 24hr has the trainers too - 5 sessions for $299!! Great job in utilizing it.

That's a good idea. I work for the YMCA and part of my "pay" is a free Y membership...that is where I am getting my "free" Personal Trainer...wish it was Bob or Jillian, but they don't work for the Y!

Sue... 10 miles per hour was just a guess on my part. Pam and I guesstimated and we may be wrong as well.
are you getting the mileage reading off your bike? nothing against your little dumpster beauty, but the odometer was the first thing to fritz out on me on my bike. maybe you shouldn't trust the odometer reading. do you have a gym membership? maybe you can get on a non-bumpster bike and see what the odometer says after 15 minutes and use that as your baseline.

Hi Michelle, Good choice of Christmas presents, Michelle! I am brining water to my first Personal Trainer training, next Monday after work. The Y gave us an opportunity to use a Personal Trainer, for FREE! So, I took them up on it. I wanted to get into Strength/Weight Training and I didn't know what to do, so this came at a perfect time. Sandra, maybe I am shortchanging myself or maybe I need to step it up a little and work harder when I ride??? TTFN, Sue

|
|
sue, i am estimating about 10 miles per hour, so it's more like 2.5 miles per 15 minutes for me. everyone travels at a different pace, but you are probably shortchanging yourself using 1.1 miles per 15 minutes on your bike.
michelle, good for you joining the gym! i used to be a member of the gym (before kids) and found the support and comraderie to be great! not to mention access to all kinds of equipment and classes. make the most of it!

Good morning everyone! I haven't reported it because I haven't been riding yet -- the fitness center here at the apt. is always too crowded -- only 2 bikes, 2 treadmills -- 700 apts == the math just doesn't work. :-)
However, I did purchase my Christmas present for myself (yes I always buy myself something since I am normally w/o a SO and even though I have an SO this year I still bought myself something -- lol).
I purchased a gym membership @ 24Hour Fitness!! Slightly more expensive on the front end than I expected but I did sign my daughter up too; however, they did let me split the fees into 2 payments -- last night and then again on the 15th. I felt guilty for about 5 minutes and said "WAIT, stop thinking like THAT -- you need, deserve and work very hard -- this is a reward."
I'll begin my riding tonight. I've never been to Seattle so that's my first destination.
Sue, where are you bringing water? I know I must have missed something (read so many posts in the last 2 days to try and get caught up I'm sure I didn't comprehend it all).
Wishing everyone a fabulous Friday!!
Hugs, Michelle

OMG, Sandra, you are amazing...I am going to go through my fitness postings over the last 2 weeks, since we started Dumpster Derby, and see how many minutes I have ridden my bike. I finally remember to find the amount of miles in 15 minutes the other night. It's 1.10 miles per 15 minutes, so I will calculate where I am in my trek to Florida and sun & surf! I'm probably only in Kentucky still! Take care all and have a great TGIF! Sue

6 more miles last night. 50 miles total. Made it to NYC! The tree is beautiful! I learned: "America has celebrated Christmas around the Rockefeller Center Tree since 1931, when Rockefeller Center was still a muddy construction site. It was a Christmas darkened by the Great Depression, and workmen proudly placed their tree in the dirt that meant jobs. That first tree celebrated the indomitable human spirit as much as Christmas, and the workmen received their precious Christmas Eve paychecks around its sprightly green branches."
I've decided to hang-out around NYC through the weekend... There are 1575 steps to the top of the Empire State Building. I think I'll do that this weekend using my basement stairs. I don't have stair climbing equipment, but my basement stairs are old and ugly so I assume they qualify as dumpster equipment. Who was climbing the Statue of Liberty??? I'll blow you a kiss from the Empire State Building!

| Sue, don't be scared, she should only push you as far as you feel comfortable. Have fun! I also worked out to where she will help me measure at the first of each month. At the first of the year I will get a full work up. I want to know where I stand at the start of the year, so I can see the great progress I will make.

Ladies, I did not realize how far behind I was on posting to this challenge!! I have been riding my bike for a total of 40 min over the last 3 days....okay so that's nothing to brag about. I am 5.2 miles closer!! I only have 136.7 miles to go! LOL!
WAIT...I walked a mile per day for the last 3 days!
I only have 133.7 miles to go!
As for my walking up and down the Eiffel tower.. 11/29=8015 steps 11/30=7422 steps 12/01=8514 steps ....that is 4 roundtrips and 39% of the 5th trip!!
This way of keeping track sure makes it fun! I am going to make a chart to monitor my progress for both trips!!
Have a great weekend and if I don't have time to check back in, happy travelling!!
Misty

Sandra, that's some really neat info about Yonkers. And a good thing you didn't get to Rockerfeller Center a couple of nights ago. The tree was lit for the first time this season last night.
Trouble, I've been meaning to respond to you about the Weiner Dog Races. I've never gone to them. Mainly because the little streets in Buda get so crowded and it's difficult to find a place to park without having to walk a great distance. But you know, now that I have more energy, that should no longer be a problem. If you are ever in the area, let me know and maybe we can meet for a cup of coffee (or a glass of water if we want to really be healthy).

| Sandra, I'll be walking with you tonight...Last night I made it two miles to my brother and sister's school, tonight I think I will head toward the highway...I might not make it (6 miles) but hopefully I can get at least half way there. I'm heading down to New York City myself to see Rent on Broadway.

| I'm going to make it to Rockefeller Center tonight. I'll be riding between 9:00 and 10:00 pm while watching the Apprentice. Anyone care to join me?

oh... i forgot to say how far i've traveled... 6 more miles last night. 44 total miles. i'm still not in Manhattan but will make it there this week for sure. can't wait to see the lights at Rockefeller Center.
i made it to yonkers, looked around and learned the following... "Founded in 1646 by Adriaen Van der Donck, whose title Jonkheer (Dutch for young gentleman) became the city's name, Yonkers served as the administrative center for the vast Philipse manor estate until the American Revolution. Yonkers residents Elisha Graves Otis invented the safety elevator, Edwin Armstrong the FM radio, Leo Baekeland "bakelite," and Charles T. Harvey the first elevated train. Long known as the City of Gracious Living for its fine neighborhoods, Yonkers is home to golf in America (1888), Riverfest, the second oldest annual marathon in the country (Boston is oldest), and the Untermyer Performing Arts Festival."
on to NYC...

Sue, I started with a personal trainer, this time. it has helped me. On days I don't want to work out, I remind myself, that if I don't my trainer will know. I'm going to keep using a trainer, she make sure, I'm doing it right and she keeps me on the exercise track. I traded paying for a trainer, for eating out everyday of the week. One of my better decisions.
Have fun everyone.

It is easier to do the cardio while watching TV, it makes the time go by faster...sometimes if I am really "antsy", I read during the commercials! Well, I have taken Coach Dean's advice on the BL Holiday Challenge and schedule what I am going to eat and what I am going to do fitness wise, already for the day. I also didn't look at the scale today, normally before my shower I look....but not today. I am going to start in with a Personal Trainer next week. The Y is offering PT services to staff for free for a while. I figure this is my time to learn how to and what to do, as far as strength training goes. That is the area I am totally lacking in. I start next week. Talk to you all later, Sue
Feel better, Pamelaanne!

Wow, y'all did really good last night.
Thanks for the concern about the ankle. It's not broken but is still quite swollen; though not as much as last night. And now it only hurts if I put pressure on it. But I am able to hobble around a little bit though my hubby won't let me get off the couch.

It's great to see the group growing.

I walked for 36 minutes during Martha's Apprentice last night...The distance was two miles, so I walked from my house to my brother and sister's elementary school.
That's the longest cardio I've done in a LONG time. Watching the show really made it easier to keep going. And I did intervals like Coach Jen suggested, which was different but nice.
Pamela - I hope your ankle is feeling a bit better today. Let us know what happens.

You all did so well...I went over to my daughters and made them dinner, then helped with the baby, so by the time I got home, I was wiped out...consequently I didn't do anything last night. I feel so sluggish when I don't work out at all. I didn't eat anything after dinner, so I guess that part was good. I just feel like I really shirked last night. Good job everyone and Pamelaanne, we will be waiting to hear about how your ankle is doing. Maybe you just did what they call "rolling" it and it will heal faster than a sprain or break. TTFN, Sue

Pam, I hope you get back on your feet soon.
I did 60 minutes tonight while watching a rented movie called "The Same River Twice"--a then and now documentary about a group of friends that bounces back and forth between a month in 1978 when they all took a river-rafting trip together and their lives now. Pretty good stuff, especially for us baby-boomers. Made me wish I had a river raft instead of an exercise bike, lol.

I had my strenght training and then 20 mins 7.5miles on the bike. I didn't make it after work (i had to work late) Then I was craving a Subway sandwich, been wanting one for days - I got a veggie with cheese.
Pam - I hope the swelling goes down.
Boy, The Derby is growing. Better watch it, we might have a traffic jam. I enjoy reading all the post. I'm not into reality tv, I watch Boston Legal, and I'm a sci-fi fan. I'm waiting for the new seasons of Stargates to come back on. I haven't gotten hooked on any new shows. I usually watch Darma & Greg during my work out.

only 10 minutes during Lost, but I had a yoga class prior, so not so bad. I'm still going slow on the stairs. My longest interval is only 1/2 hour, but I'll get there, a little at a time.
Good episode tonight. I missed last week, so I'm catching up. Hope everyone did well tonight.

oh pam, i'm so sorry. that's terrible. ice down that ankle and baby it. i'll wait for your update anxiously.
I rode for 40 minutes during Lost tonight. I tried doing intervals like Jen suggested, but I couldn't keep-up the intensity for more than 15 seconds or so. It was really hard. I wonder if that's normal. I've never done intervals before.

Well guys, I won't be riding tonight after all. 20 minutes into my walk I went down hard. My right ankle is so swollen I probably won't be walking on it for quite awhile. Don't think it is broken based on where the swelling is. I'll decide tomorrow if I need to go to the doctor's or not.
