I also have pop and tap water available free where I work too. I do not like the taste of the tap water, so I either bring my own bottled water or use the tap water and add a squirt or 2 of one of the drinks. Sometimes I add orange soda, lemonade, or the lemon-lime soda. Just 1 squirt and the tap water is so much more refreshing and tolerable. Becky, SP dietitian

| It does sound like quite the dilemma. Do you have an employee break room? If you do, you could purchase a lunch cooler at Target or Walmart (they can be purchased for as little as $5 or $6) and pack cold bottles of water that are different than the brand that is sold there. You could also lable your stuff with your name on it so that it doesn't walk off. Just an idea.....

| Thnk you for the advice. I don't want to buy bottled water. I find that my problem with soda is at work mainly. I work in a fast food restaurant and the only free beverages there are the tap water and soda. I don't like the taste of the water there because I'm not used to the taste of softened water. I try to bring my own from home but it gets too warm. It's very hot and dry at work, so I drink a lot. Buying water isn't a good option there because it can be confused with the bottled water that we sell.

Have you also tried the Propel water? I enjoy that at dinner. Aquafina also has flavored water now too.

Drinking carbonated water is definitely a better deal than soda, and it can definitely count as some of your daily water intake, but using it exclusively in place of regular water could potentially cause problems. There's some evidence that it can break down calcium in the body, contributing to possible problems with tooth decay and even osteoporosis. It can also speed absorption of alcohol, cause bloating and constipation, and irritate your esophagus. So, like most things, it apparently needs to be used in moderation. I guess the only one of these potential problems that could be "hidden" could be the calcium problem--you'll most likely know about the others from the symptoms they cause in time to do something about it. So, maybe the best approach would be to do what you need to do to break the soda habit, but keep your eye on these other concerns and get a bone density test every now and then.

| I heard somewhere that soda is bad for you but soda water isn't. They said that it's because there is no caffeine or other bad stuff in it. It's just water mixed with carbon gas. It was suggested that people who have a hard time giving up soda and have a hard time drinking enough water could drink soda water mixed with Crystal Light. Is this actually a real solution to my soda drinking problem??
