the scale i have at home is pretty old, so its all screwy and shows weight 10-20pounds higher than it is, and seeing that, makes me even more motivated.
but i rely on the scale @ the doctors and the gym.. i dont think you relally need one at home

| That's a great point about some of us being large enough that losing X number of pounds may not show up at all in measurements. I've decided that even though I weigh every morning when i first wake up, before I eat or drink anything -- I should start measuring myself, too. My first week I've lost a lot of week but that will slow down now, and measurements may keep me sane during weeks when the weight loss isn't there!

| I personally weigh myself daily, because as big as I am, losing 10 lbs barely makes a dent and doesn't show up on measurements/clothing sizes. Heck, I wear a size 20 now at 270, and when I weighed 185 6 years ago I wore a 16. The scale will fluctuate a little based on how hydrated you are, etc, but I plot the points on a little graph in the bathroon, and it is really encouraging to see the steady downward trend. If you do buy a scale, get a really good one you can trust and write down your weight whenever you weigh yourself so you can see how it is decreasing. So I think if you can keep from getting "obsessed," it is very useful and encouraging to use the scale.

I agree with LOTSACATS, sometimes in the first 3 weeks either you lose or you gain weight and it really makes you panic this is due to the fact that if you are working out you will be developing muscles and as a result you seem to gain weight and you cannot trust your scale, the best thing to do is measure yourself to see your progress, This is what happened to me last week I was like what the heck I am eating 1200 calories daily and work out everyday, not counting my walking and me chasing after my kid but when I measured myself I was felt a sense of releif because I lost 1 to 1 and a half inch around my waist and neck, so this show me that I'm on my way to slimming down. Weighing scale is not really necessary unless you really wanted to keep a track of your weight. It does make you obsessed on checking your weight every now and then...

I know this isn't true for everyone, but I love my scale. I want to know how much I weigh, because I don't want to fool myself into thinking I weigh less than I do. Even when I've watched it go to an all-time high, I'd still rather know what I weigh than not.
I do weigh every day.

I have a scale and when I first started working out again I was weighing myself a lot. Over the last few months, I weaned myself down to one week, and now, I hardly weigh myself. I get weighed in and measured monthly at Curves, so I use that to gauge my weight loss/inches lost.
I agree that if you plan to buy one, have someone keep it away from you except for weekly weigh in or monthly weigh ins. Measureing is the best gauge for losing as you will see it there quicker than you'll see the numbers drop on the scale.

| the scale is only one tool. How your clothes fit is another. Also, the tape measure. I use them all but I like the scale myself and I weigh most days. I'm not obsessed, I use it to see how I am doing and I expect it to jump around a little, but I know in the long run, it will head downwards

| There's no reason to buy a scale if you have valid concerns. You could take your measurements monthly and use that to gauge your progress. Or if you do buy a scale, do you live with someone else who can keep it hidden away so you can only access it once a week? Or maybe use a friend or neighbor's scale once a week to weigh in.

| HI! I haven't had a scale for 15 years. I'm afraid I might become obsessed with weighing myself, and I don't want to feel terrible if I gained a few pounds, or lost less than I thought I would. What do you think- should I just go by my clothing size, or other factors? Thanks so much!
