not being an advocate of fast food restaurants - I did take my 3.5 yr old daughter to a party at McDonalds. The kids played on the indoor playground and then each got a happy meal with prize, cake and icecream. I heard the cost was only $5 per child.

Parents - if they wanted to eat - paid on their own. I would never think of leaving my daughter anywhere without checking it out first.

In speaking with other parents that have had parties, I found out that some parents actually drop off their kids AND siblings and just leave....I don't understand how someone can do that to their kids....just drop them off at a house they have never been at and leave???? (and in a couple cases pick them up almost an hour late)

I would like to avoid this as I am not sure who they were referring to. Is there something suttle I can put on the invitations indicating that they must stay at the party with their kids??? I don't want to spend my son's birthday party being a babysitter for parents that take too much advantage of someone's birthday party.
Other family members of mine said they even had that happen to them when they had parties for thier children over the years.....

How can I avoid the "drop-off" situation?

I'm a cake decorator, by trade, and I hear all the scoop on party planning. One of the key things about children's parties is that they recommend one child for every year of the child's age. 5 year old birthday=5kids. It actually makes sense to me.
There are lots of websites for do it yourself party planning and cakes, everything.
Pick a theme and go with it. Be creative, and honestly they really don't need a ton of organized games. They get bored with them very quickly.

That sounds like a fun party and one that the children will enjoy! A great site with craft ideas is http://www.sproutonline.com/crafts/index.html

They even have a link for birthday craft ideas. It's a PBS website so very kid friendly (and kid tested I'm sure!!).

Enjoy the party and your son's 5th birthday!

Be well,
Kelly

Thank you for your replies. They are great ideas.

I asked my son last night who he really wanted at his party. He gave me about 6-8 names. So I figured I could just invite the ones he really wanted as opposed to the whole class.

I am going to do an afternoon party with just crafts, pinata cake and ice cream and snacks
Theme--Harry Potter.
The craft will be the kids making thier own magic wands and decorating them. After that, they can all take a whack at the Sorting Hat pinata....followed by ice cream and cake...I found a site that has Harry Potter party ideas...I will check it out and see what else we can do for fun.

Have a great day!

One word: Rent a jumper. OK that was three, but kids love love love love the whole jumper thing. That would be the only entertainment you would need. It might be a little pricey. I paid about $125 but had the jumper the whole day. If you are worried about food just have cake and ice cream. Plan for 2pm-5pm That way its very clear a meal will not be served. Just put out sone veggies and dip.

I would say just keep it simple and think "old school." Think of games that you enjoyed as a child. See about renting an area at a park and do outside activities or you could even do it at your house provided you have the backyard for it. As far as food - I personally would think cookout. If the adults are all family maybe even a potluck where you'd provide the drinks and cake. And if a cake for that many seems too expensive (or too much to make) consider a cupcake cake (you put a bunch of cupcakes together to form a "cake" - and this limits the plates and silverware needed for the cake too). Hope that helps some!

My son will be turning 5 in about a month.
I am trying to plan his party and this year, he would like all his classmates invited. (20 kids+parents).
Previous parties I only invited family, but then there are no young children except for my son....so this year he asked for his friends from his daycare....

Does anyone have any ideas??? I don't have that much money to have a large party of people plus my family.
I know that not everyone would be able to make it, but I need to plan ahead but don't know what to do as far as a party...what food to have (would need enough for a lot of people)
I also don't know how to entertain a lot of kids (I only have one child — not used to multiple)...
What do you do if kids don't get along at the party?

I thought about a Chuck E Cheese party--but that can be very expensive.

Any ideas on what to do would be appreciated.

Thanks.
