| I agree about the dairy. I don't like the fat-free cheese but I have switched all dairy in the house to low fat/skim over the past few months and have stayed consistent with it. I still have to buy whole milk for my husband but he is Mr. Metabolism anyway so it never has an effect on him.

I'm glad you feel motivated. Starting to lose weight and change your eating habits can be such an overwhelming thought. I'm still working on things and need to figure what goes next.
This morning, I realized the easiest change I made was with dairy. It so easy to use fat free sour cream, low-fat cheese, and light/sugar free yogurts. I'm not a big fan of "diet" foods but since dairy foods aren't generally replacing fat with something else, I figured it would be a safe switch. I tried the fat-free cheese and didn't like it too much so I went up to low-fat but lowered the portions. It has good flavor and consistency.
So, if you like dairy, maybe this would be an easy first step for you too.

The spark resources have alot of info on this. Life long habits take time to change. starting small is good. REad everything you can, get more active and doing outdoor activities you enjoy. I wish you well, Teresa

| CORHORVATH I feel like a huge burden has been lifted after reading your reply, thanks. I guess I assumed I needed to do something drastic, it is nice to know I can start small. I am going to give it some thought and figure out the best place for me to begin. Thanks!

For me and my husband, what's worked best was starting small. For instance, we gave up beef and use turkey instead. Then went the flour tortillas. Then portion controll. We weren't tracking anything at this point, we just started making changes.
After a while, we felt much more able and confident that we could make stricter changes and really stick to them. But we only made changes one or two at a time. At this point, he's lost over 30 lbs and I've lost 10.
It truly is a lifestyle change. I would suggest starting by eliminating or changing one thing you're willing to give up.

| TODDSGIRLPATTI thanks so much for the advice. I need to spend some more time reading as you have so I will feel more prepared. I too have managed to shed some weight in the past but this time is for real - I am not turning back.

Though I am new to SP, I am not new to losing weight. The best thing to do is to start off slow. I just read a ton of articles on here that they have for us to read when in Stage 1. There are three things: Start Slow, Have Support and Track your goals.
I am also following the rule of taking it day by day. I always put so muc pressure on myself to lose quickly and tat is really unrealistic. So this time around I am focusing on taking baby steps. I am going to just take it moment by moment. I usually get upset with myself and if I do bad one day I will scrap the whole day and say I will start over tomorrow or the next monday... Forget that, start over right now!
Anyways, I am not sure how helpful this is, but hopefully we will see each other around! :) Good luck!

| I am new to sparkpeople and I have to say I love it. Knowing I have access to people who are in the same boat I am in makes overweight life much less lonely. My question are the best things to be focusing on right now to get my body to drop some pounds?
