As Yoop said, HRMs CAN work for strength training. The fact is, you burn calories by just being alive. So anything that involves extra activity is going to burn extra calories.

Now, is strength training considered cardio? Only if you keep your heart rate elevated for an extended period of time (ideally 15-20 minutes or more). Many people are able to reach cardio status during strength training, but only you can be the judge of that.

I use the cardio tracker more as a "Calories Burned Tracker" than anything. I wear my HRM for any extra exercise, cardio or not. Then I track it because my HR gives me calories burned. It's pretty accurate because it's taking into account my Age, Gender, Height, Weight, and most important...Hear Rate.

A couple of opinions.

I log my strength training as cardio under cicuit training, AND I perform it fast enough to BE circuit training. Not the reps quickly, but the short break between sets and between exercises.

HRM DOES work for strength training, as long as you're not hangign around ogling or talking. Using one will give you some idea of how quickly to move between sets/exercises.

I thought that HRMs were no good for strength training. I held off buying one because of that, but I had not questioned anyone using one. Does the monitor work for you on strength, or does it have to be circuit training that is fastr enough to keep a cardio pace?

Susan,

The guys gave you some good answers on how to record the training. As far as why it's not in the system, weight training is different for everyone based on actual strength. You and I will exert different amounts of energy trying to lift 50 pounds. Unfortunately there is no forumla to figure out calories burned for strength training, unless you have a heart rate monitor. Without getting a heart rate monitor, your best bet is to just follow the suggestions already given by the guys.

Hi:
I use a multi gym in my home and manually entered all of the individual exercises on the strentgh page of my tracker (along with the # of reps). I also manually entered any of the other strength exercises I do with free weights and my power tower, along with using some of the exercises found on this site.
Each "strength day" (M,W,F for me), my entire list pops up, and I just check off the 9-12 exercises I do that day.
I've manually entered and saved my cardio workouts also, so on days I do cardio, I just browse to the ones I do that day, and enter my time and calories.

Hope that helps,
Rick

Log it as strength.

Hi SUEANN,

Just my opinion, but I would certainly log any activity that involves resistance and/or weights under strength training. I think we would probably want to keep the log in exercise options as simple as possible in order to avoid confusion as well as keeping it simple so that people will be more inclined to actually use it.

You certainly didn't leave a damper here in the Guys' Lounge and hope to see you around anytime you have a question or just want to hang out.

Take care and KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!

ok now hope i didnt get anyone too excited! LOL!

Would also like to say hi and thanks to all the men who actually opened this thread to see how they could help a lady! awwww... thanks guyzzz...

anyway, sorry to put a damper on things, but i have been using the multi gym and i figured, men are probably the biggest users of it, so how do u guys log that in? in the fitness page for strength training?

or can we ask spark collectively to also add that as a feature?! thoughts?! suggestions?!

thanks guys, hope this post wasnt a damper! eeps.
