Hey guys, sorry if I sounded offended, but I really wasn't. I was surprised at the responses because they were so negative. However, I'm looking at the positive side, and that is QUICK weight loss and yes, it is healthy. I agree that some people do it the UNhealthy way by eating nothing but fats and oils, but I however eat a ton of veggies and LEAN protein. My carbs come from my greens and I have had a ton of energy. I've lived like this for a long time prior to having my daughter, but never really knew what it was called. However, I'm only just now starting the "induction" phase, which is a detox period. Getting rid of sugar addictions sounds healthy to me, not to mention that my blood sugar will be leveled if I follow the diet properly. I am hyperglaucemic(spelling?) so this diet is great for me but it contains no artifical sugars or 'starchy' carbs that will spike it. I really dont actually understand why this is considered an "unhealthy" diet by some. The first 2 weeks are strict in the types of foods I can eat, but fruits and grain products are added slowly later on so as not to cause a complete chaos in my sugar levels. But anyways...Yes, this is the diet for me. And I will have no problem maintaining this lifestyle.

Aryn,
Please don't get defensive. We are all here to help and support eachother through this journey. Most of the people on this site are very educated and will not give an opinion without supporting facts. As the other poster said, the "old' atkins is very frowned upon due to the health risks it is associated with, and SP is all about healthy weight loss.

Aryn,
I think it's great that you are finding something that works for you. But I will say that SP does not endorse Atkins, so you will find a lot of people on our site that tell you why it's not a good idea- and that's not for lack of research.

i don't eat white flour, white bread or sugar but i also don't eat any other meat than chicken breast or sea-food....the "old" atkins that a friend of mine did was all abt eggs and stakes :( now excuse me but that is NOT healthy at all. she lost a ton but she gained it all back. what you are referring of is not atkins then. but also pay attention to counting carbs. if u don't eat enough you will end up without energy.
again i was referring to "old " Atkins. and again, if it works for you and u consider it to be healthy, it's ur body not mine. i only said that i agree wt coach Jen!
ps: excuse me for not researching what i already knew frm friends what it was. i think we are entitled to opinions girly. and i don't intend to get into an argument wt u over this. i was just stating my opinions based on facts frm friends

The people that are doing this diet with me (family, friends on another board) did an experiment on reactions to the atkins diet with their doctors. A couple told their doctor what I told you, lean protein, lots of veggies, no flour, no sugar, carbs from veggies, etc. Their replies were "Good job!" "Keep up the good work!" However, when the "atkins" word is spoken, people go into a frenzy!

You must be referring to all the bad hype out there about this diet. Does lean protein, lots of veggies, no sugar, no flour seem unhealthy to you? Hmmm, My doctor is all for it. The atkins diet is medically and scientifically sound and there are journals to prove it all. Those who disagree simply have not picked up the Dr. atkins book, havent done any research, and are basing their assumptions simply on word of mouth. Look up Ketosis, and it'll explain it all. When you are in Ketosis, which is a factual state your body can enter, your fat is burned for fuel. My doctor, and most of my family are on this diet and the results are stunning. My father in law's cholesterol has dropped by about 35 points since he's started. It's also a fantastic way of detoxing to rid your body of any sugar addictions. Please, do your research before posting your opinions.

I agree wt Jen. plus atkins is not healthy at all. not to mention i'm allergic to eggs and i'm a semi-vegetarian so...i wouldn't be able to do that sort of thing ever!
i had a lot of success wt SP and totally love it: healthy, slow but steady and most important, keep it off! i've been at 136 lbs on my wedding day on Nov 4th and i've managed to maintain after that. now i want to lose some more. but i lost 30 lbs for my wedding only by logging my food and eating wisely and working out

Aryn,
Everyone has to figure out what works best for them, but I'd have to disagree that atkins is the way to go. The best way to lose weight and keep it off long term is to think of it as a lifestyle change and less like a "diet". There's a great article in the Nutrition Resource Center called "The Truth About Carboyhdrates" that you might want to check out.
Our program is set up to help you safely lose 1/2-2 lbs per week. The reason slow weight loss is better is b/c research has shown you're more likely to keep it off, and when you lose weight too quickly, a high percentage of that is muscle weight instead of fat.
Hope that helps. If you have questions let me know.

Hey everyone! I have been cramming my head with research and seems to me like Atkins/Low carb is definitely the way to go. It's a strict diet, but it's proven to melt those pounds away. I have already filled my pantry and am starting on day one of the "induction phase". My father in law lost 28 pounds in 3 weeks and I'm hoping to catch up! Anyone else out there who have had success with this? Give me some pointers! Thanks!
