Too Much Time in the Kitchen

SUPERMOMX, I really like this idea. I'm afraid to take off the gate to the kitchen just yet, though, because the basement stairs are there and I haven't child-proofed the kitchen. Maybe I'm being too overprotective on this - my kid is 3. I think for now I'll put the food in a cooler and set it somewhere in the living room. Thanks a lot for the idea!

When my son hit 4 years old, I let him take over some of his snack duties. I spend a few minutes on the weekend getting a snack bin ready for the week. I put it on a low shelf in the cupboard and then anytime he needs a snack he can pop in there and grab something. I make up little plastic baggies of crackers, fruit chips, fruit leather, trail mix, etc. I also put a bin in the fridge with a few small oranges, an apple, some grapes, some string cheese, stick yogurt, etc. Same thing there- he can just pick something out when he needs it. Then I know he's getting something healthy and I don't have to find myself in the kitchen every two hours!
There are days I do prep some more involved snacks like sliced cheese or wraps or whatever, but I try to get as much as I can ready in the morning so I can keep my fingers out of the fridge as much as possible.

Thanks for the ideas. The gum chewing doesn't work with me (I start thinking about food more when I'm chewing gum), but the water sounds good. Each time I'm in the kitchen I'll drink a glass of water before I start cooking and keep one handy during my time in the kitchen.

I'm also thinking that I should maybe keep a stash of celery or carrot sticks around.

I'm having the same issue. I'm a stay at home mom and have two small children that ask for a snack about every two hours. My husband also comes home for his lunch hour.So I find that I'm in the kitchen all day long.
I have a 18oz. plastic cup that I TRY to fill with water every time I'm making meals and snacks. Or I eat a piece sugar free candy, so I have something to keep my mouth busy.
I hope the ideas help! I know it's hard to keep food off your mind when you have little ones asking for it all day.

I find a lot of my time is spent in the kitchen preparing meals and snacks for my family. My husband and preschooler have nearly nonstop appetites. I'm so tired of being tempted to nibble on food while I'm preparing their meals. Any advice for taming the munchies while in the kitchen?
