Well we haven't decided on the big projects yet. But for their 15 hour leadership portion they are going to put on a career fair and badge workshop for other girls that want to earn the badge. They will kill tow birds with one stone. They need to do those things to earn the badge and they help other girls do the same.

That's a good choice. Community service projects go much better when they have personal conviction behind them.

We haven't had our meeting yet. I had is scheduled the last two Friday's and it has been a snow storm both weekends. Yuck! Suppose to be in the 50's this week. I have it rescheduled for Friday. Third times a charm.

There are 6 girls involved. They will each choose their own project. They probably won't choose the project right away. I just wanted to give them different options to choose from. They have lots of requirements to earn first before the BIG project.

My daughter is discussing Organ Donor Awareness. My dad has had two liver transplants, my ex mother in law has had a liver transplant, and a very close friend just lost her brother last week because they couldn't find a matching donor.

I used to help clean up local laygrounds,go to your local parks department, they will have loads of ideas for you there. It's so great to see that children are still interested in helping their communities!

I'm not sure how old your girl scouts are, but one of the cool projects I have heard about lately involved landscaping work (planting flowers, etc). The three scenarios I heard about were as follows:

1. Planting flats of flowers in the spring at nursing homes. Beautifies and the reward from thankful nursing home residents was overwhelming.

2. Planting flats of flowers / bulbs / bushes at a city beautification project. They weren't overly big, but they were near heavily travelled areas that welcomed people to the downtown area. This project also included mulching.

3. Planting flats of flowers / bulbs / bushes / small trees at a habitat for humanity home. In this case, you can often find people to donate nursery items (added part of the project) to add the finishing touches to the new home before the new tenants move in. Very rewarding experience.

Thought these might be useful ideas as spring is getting ready to roll around. I'm not sure what area of the world you live in, but these are perfect projects for the Indiana area within the next couple of months.

a dear friend of mine has a daughter that worked towards her silver award..

She actually created her own service project... She did a book drive for a local charity..

She had to learn had to organize the project and make the connections for the project...

Her other daughter did the silver award and did something with animals at the animal shelter...
I forget the details..

Maybe these can be ideas for your daughter...

Volunteermatch.com has loads of local places looking for help (call to verify validity of a place; the site doesn't do that for you).

If there's an adaptive swimming or horseback riding place near you, that could be a lot of fun. Or volunteering at a local hospital or hospice. Don't know if there's one near you or if you're okay with it, but most AIDS hospices are in desperate need of volunteers for everything from company to yardwork.

A unique and possibly relevant way might be to look into I-safe. It is free for parents and educators and offers a mentoring program where older children are trained to work with younger children to help them remain safe on the internet. How to avoid online predators what to do if about cyber bullying and other topics. Not sure if that would work for a service program though.

My daughter is planning on earning the Girl Scout Silver Award. The end project requires a 40 hour service project. I want to find some unique ideas for a service project. I am also helping 4 other girls earn the same award and would like to throw out some ideas for them as well. Thanks for the help!
