I am new to spark but I am not new to being over weight and pregnant. When I found out I was pregnant with my daughter (now 14 months) I weighed in at 296 pounds. I have high blood pressure and that is a huge risk while being pregnant, kinda like fuel and fire they don't mix. My doctor said to really watch what I eat and be VERY careful, she didn't want me to gain any weight because it could indanger myself and the baby. That was easier said than done. But, in the end it was easier done than said. Sounds strange I know, but my cravings were fruits and veggies and milk and drand alot of water and tea. Not like I didn't have a full enough bladder as it was. But I did it. I ended up maintaining my weight and when I gave birth I was 1 pound under my start weight when I delivered. After I delivered I ended up losing 20 pounds right away due to the birth. I ended up keeping my cravings and 1 year later I have lost a total of 51 pounds. You really need to talk to your doctor but maintaining your weight is I think better than gaining alot like some do and then trying to get it off afterwards, I don't think dieting and losing alot of weight would be very healthy for you or the baby because you might end up lacking someing in the end. I would say maintaining is the best was to go.
GOOD LUCK

Yes, it does take a little time to conceive. With my first it took 5 months after going off the pill (then misscarried that one) then it took 8 months to get pregnant after that and he was a healthy 8 LB baby. The second child it didn't take much and it happened the first time. Same with my girlfreind but she had more problems and took 3 years to get pregnant with her first, and second one was within 2 months.

Yes you can get a LOT Of info on Babyfit
Just use the same user name and passcode as SP.

Ksmith,

It depends on how much exercise you're doing. If you're training for endurance events, for example, that could make conceiving more difficult. But if you're just active and getting a healthy amount of exercise, it shouldn't interfere.

Hang in there- I know it's hard to be patient, but it takes most people at least 6 months to get pregnant once they start trying :)

I'm glad someone else brought up this topic. My husband and I are trying to conceive, and at the end of our second month trying we still have no baby yet. BUT, I've been exercising consistently for 2 years now. I'm not at the weight I want to be at but my MD says I'm at a healthy weight to get pregnant and not be at risk for gestational diabetes or pre-eclampsia. I'm glad to know others have exercised while pregnant, cuz I'm with you, I don't want to have to stop now!! But I know that some weight loss is essential for a healthy pregnancy.

Thanks for posting about the sister site, babyfit.com. I'll have to check that out!!!

Has anyone heard about having difficulty conceiving due to exercising???

Dito the Talk to your Dr.
Some Dr. will let you workout to a degree, depending on the workout and intensity ONLY if you have been doing it for a while. They will not recommend you STARTING a workout plan when pregnant.

I was able to walk twice a week at lunch with a freind. I remember from the first pregnancy class the Dr. office had us go to, they said you could also do light hand weights (NO MACHINES) for some added strength.

You want to talk to your doctor about this one. I was very overweight when I was pregnant and asked my doctor about dieting. He wanted me to eat sensibly and get regular exercise but I still needed to gain a few pounds to make sure the baby was healthy. You might want to put off children until you are done with your weight loss.
Either way make sure you are getting enough nutrients and you might want to talk to your doctor about Folic Acid-- it was the buzz word a couple of years ago.
Either way good luck!

I don't think it is wise at all to consider staying the same weight or losing while pregnant. I was very overweight when pregnant and talked to our doctor. He recommended aiming for a 10-15 pound gain. This is actually breaking even, btw because the baby and placenta typically weigh around 15 pounds. I gained 15 with both pregnancies as within a week was back to my pre-pregnancy weight. That said, I then gained weight because I continued to eat as though pregnant. LOL.

Talk to your dr about this... but when you are pregnant your health and that of your baby are vitally important. More so than your weight. Eat well and exercise properly and you will be fine.

Eating healthy is always recommended during pregnancy, and you also don't want to over exert yourself w/ exercise. My cousin was overweight at the beginning of her pregnancy and the doctor suggested that she only gain 10-15 pounds instead of the normal 25-35ish. While many people say it's okay to eat whatever junk you want because you're eating for 2, it's not true. Sure you are nourishing yourself and a baby, just eat healthy and eat plenty (just not junk). So I would say no, it's not safe to lose weight while pregnant, but eating healthy and only gaining the recommended amount from your doctor, will make losing afterwards that much easier. You may end up weighing less right after delivery than you did when you got pg.

So, with all this said, you should definately talk to your OB about it first. If you are wanting to start trying, you should schedule an appointment anyway to get the go-ahead, and start taking prenatal vitamins w/ folic acid asap! I wish you the best of luck on your trying to conceive journey! Keep me posted!

B,

You'd want to talk to your doctor about this, but typically, weight loss is not recommended during pregnancy. If you start off your pregnancy overweight, your doctor will usually just recommend you gain less weight than someone who is a normal weight to start.

I'd recommend you check out our sister site, www.babyfit.com, which is for pregnant women and those trying to conceive. It's also free, and should give you some great information.

Let me know if you have more questions!

If you start off overweight is it ok to lose weight while pregnant? I dont mean really restricting cals or anything but if you eat like 1800-2000 cals a day and do the cardio and weight training and lose weight because of it, is it a bad thing?

I have been on a roll with myu weight loss and dont want to stop but we are thinking about trying to conceive. Will I have to stop losing and just maintain if I get pregnant?

Some part of me just says to hold off a few more months and see if i can get to my goal by then before trying, but the other half wants to go ahead and start trying next month like we thought we would (before i started being successful with my loss again)

what do you think?
