Why are the last ten pounds the hardest to lose?

HIKE_IT,

It seems likely that that could be the case. Another option could be that your "ideal weight" is not really your ideal weight. I'm obviously not saying this IS the case. I don't even know you. A check of you body fat percentage could really help determine this. Either way, you've done great so far, and I have confidence that you'll finish strong.

Keep up the good work,
Mike

I am not sure why, but I have been stuck on the last 9 lbs for about a week and a half. I have added more strength training so maybe I am adding muscle mass and losing fat.

There is a lot to be said about that as well. Most people have a weight their body is comfortable with. IN other words, your body begins to feel that it can't afford to lose more weight.

What about the idea "the closer you get to your optimum weight the more difficult weight is to lose because you body 'wants to' maintain reserves?

The one argument against that would be, that when your metabolism is higher, your body is more efficient and burns more calories. Theoretically, if your metablosim is higher then it should be "easier" to lose weight. Plus, many people people put on muscle as they increase their metaoblism. So a person is getting healthier, getting in better shape, sometimes getting smaller, but not losing any weight at all.

Another way to think about why it seems harder is a percentage of loss. When you're heavy (I was 265) a 1% loss can easily be 2-3 lbs. But as you lose weight 1% becomes a smaller number.

I've been told the reason for the "last 10 lbs" saying is because your metabolism is up, and your body has become more efficient at using what you are putting into it. This might seem counter-intuitive, but when you first start losing weight, the body is sluggish and weight just falls off as you rev up your metabolism. As your body gets more efficient, you need to work harder to continue the changes. It could also be perception - I know it kills me when I spend a few weeks losing 2 or 3 lbs a week, then go a week or two doing everything right, and the scale doesn't seem to change...

GOLFPRO,

That makes sense. I figured the reason the last ten pounds were "the hardest to lose" simply came down to motivation. When your "way out of shape", you know you've got a lot of work to do. When you've lost a lot of weight and everyone is telling you how good you look it might be easier to "cut corners".

Thanks for the info.

GANS333,

I lied to myself the whole time I was putting on the extra weight. Why not lie to myself while I'm taking it off. Seems like an easy solution, but I'm done lying to myself.

"Wouldn't the same number or calories make up every pound, be it the first, middle or last?"

Yes, 3,500 calories is a pound, no matter what you weigh. The main difference, at 175 lbs you're body needed more calories to maintain it's weight, so you could eat 2,000-2,500 calories a day and maintain or lose. At 150 lbs your body may only need 1,500 calories to maintain. So you have to eat less to maintain, let alone lose.

I'm now officially 9.6 pounds away from my "goal weight. I've been told numerous times that the last ten pounds are the hardest to lose. Why would that be? Wouldn't the same number or calories make up every pound, be it the first, middle or last? Enlighten me oh wise ones!
