Well I can tell you firsthand that I was really depressed before and after my surgery cause I was in so much pain I couldn't think straight so your brother may be dealing with depression so keep a close eye on him to make sure he doesn't go through that alone.
I needed a wake up call from my family to tell me that I was getting depressed and needed help.
So as for the exercise I mentally couldn't tackle it after the 2 year mark of the fusion cause the surgeon told me it would take that long to heal so after that anniversary i started walking slowly and then more and more until I was at a 2-3 mile a day mark.
After doing that for awhile with no pain I joined the gym and started doing the eliptical and then added the weight machines (no free weights just yet)
So far so good.

Cory thats good news to hear, my bro got in an accident a few years back and has off and on tried to work out but always results in him giving up. I have told him time and time again that I will help him in the gym to get his back strong again but he always has an excuse. I have criticized him about being to mental about it and it gets him offended, but I know the more he sits around and uses it as his crutch its only going to get worse. What were some exercises that got you going again??
Thanks for any insight

Hi Cory,
Welcome to SparkPeople! While I can't say I've had back surgery, I can relate to some extent. I have damage to L3/L4, L4/L5. I'm very careful with exercising when my back hurts, but I manage.
My physical therapist has given me the advice that you're following...when it hurts, stop doing it. Please feel free to let me know if I can ever help along the way.

Hi Guys
I had a Spinal Fusion 2 years ago and after getting fat and lazy I decided that I'm not scared any more to start exercising once gain.
Has anyone else been thru this?
I'm taking it easy and doing only light weights more reps and I stop as soon as I feel any pain at all.
Losing weight has helped so much I can't even begin to tell you.
