CARRYING AROUND A SMALL NOTEBOOK IS SO HELPFUL. IT CAN BE SMALL ENOUGH TO FIT IN YOUR PURSE OR POCKET. AFTER YOU EAT SOMETHING JUST JOT DOWN WHAT YOU ATE AND THE CALORIES AND WHEN YOU GET A CHANCE TO GO TO THE COMPUTER YOU HAVE EVERTHING RIGHT THERE IN FRONT OF YOU. I HOPE THIS HELPS GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR WEIGHT LOSS!!!

Hey, while counting calories, I found that keeping a book (journal) in my bag where I write everything down to be extremely helpful.

Yep, you have to count the calories. I ate out yesterday for lunch and had what I thought was a small meal. I only ate half of what was served. I logged it in and WOW! 800 calories. That sent me right back to my turkey sandwich on whole wheat. I ate it happily today...

Another thing you could try, that I found on this site is if you have a camera on your cell, you can take pictures of everything you eat and email it to your SP account! I know that there is a link at the bottom of my SP home page to sign up for it. Pretty cool, and convenient!

If you have access to the site during the day, go right to the "track food" section and you can fill it out at that time. Otherwise you can just write down what you eat on a pad of paper (dedicated just for your food) and when you can get to the computer again you can do it all at that time. As much as I dreaded the thought of doing that, I have to say it's been so much fun to see the results at the end of the day.

Its really difficult to count my calories because of all the hours I work. I tend to forget some of what I have eaten. Any suggestions?

Great job! The first 2-3 weeks are definitely the hardest while you "retrain" your brain to what a serving size actually is.

It does get easier, I promise!

Thanks! Saving your own recipes sounds awesome! This site is so great! I agree about being honest with yourself when measuring, I have finally realized that I am only cheating myself when I fudge on my food diary or calorie counting or whatever. Thanks for the tips!

We bought one of those little digital postal scales for about $30 years ago, and it comes in handy for weighing some things. But you can do without it too. There is a "portion control" article somewhere on Spark that gives you guidelines for measuring stuff.

A set of measuring cups is a MUST.

If one cup of something is 100 calories, then be honest with yourself when you measure stuff out. I have been here a little less than three months, and the support and information is invaluable to me.

It is pretty simple really, and being able to track your calories online makes it just that much easier!

Now about figuring calories for home cooked meals. That takes a little longer, but it can be easily done.

Here is what I do:

Go to the "resource center" tab, and then click on "recipes"

Then click on the picture "create share save your own recipes"

Then enter your ingredients
put down how many servings the recipe makes, and it will tell you how many calories there are in a serving!!!

you can add your recipe to your "favorites" and then when you go to enter food just go to favorites, select your "homemade" item, and bingo you are on track! We have several homemade items listed that way, because there are certain recipes we make on a reg basis

It just takes time. Take it slow and easy, and make it work for you.

Best wishes
Walt

Thanks for the encouragement!!
I've done this before so I know when I can't count calories, I need to watch my portions.
Watch them get really small!

I think the hardest part of counting calories is measuring everything. I need to buy a scale so that I can weigh meats and such. I also have trouble figuring the calorie content of home cooked meals. Maybe I make it too hard? I love your positive attitude, that truly is the best tool to have! Congratulations and good luck!

Count those calories!!! It is important, otherwise you have no clue where you are on the intake! It will get easier as you do it a while.

Also..DRINK THAT WATER. MIN 8 CUPS A DAY.

This is only my 2nd day. Yesterday I blew it on calorie counting, but today I stayed at 1500.
Calorie counting is tedious but it really helps me stay on track!
I haven't started exercising yet. I've been home sick, but I know when I add exercise to counting those calories I'll have success!
