I just thought I'd share my thoughts here....my son i autistic so he is definitely picky, but my daughter is pretty picky too, although I try to keep fruits around the house and once in a while she will eat them...I just don't push it and I make sure she sees me making smoothies out of fruit(cause I'M the picky eater and I can't stand fruit unless its blended into a smoothie! I also like very few vegetables) When I was a child/teenager I NEVER ate fruit and I ate very few vegetables, but I was never sick or dying!!! I think that eventually your daughter will eat other things, especially when shes a little older and sees her friends eating salads/fruits/etc. Cause you know teenage girls are ALWAYS dieting even if they don't need too!!! I just don't think its anything to be really worried about at this age since she's too old to force into anything. Unless her hair is falling out or something from malnutrition, I definitely would not waste my money on a dietician/nutritionist....

You think you have it bad, when my daughter was about 1 1/2 years old we spent a month in the childern's hospital because she would not eat and she lost about 8 pounds in 2 weeks. Finally the Doctors diagnosed Ankia, my youngest daughter,as being a saver picky eater borderlineing on a genetic eating disorder. Now that she is 2 1/2 years old she is still on 2 cans of pedasure, an extra 1800 cal., a day, on top of what ever we can get her to eat that day. If we take her off the pedasuer she looses weight still because she doesn't eat enough in a day to maintain her weight and continue to grow. We also see her pedatrision? once a month. So in short I understand completely what you are going through. For me I end up being a short order cook and I make Anika any of the foods that I know that she will eat, or give her what she wants to eat when it is meal time or close to.

Wow! You are good! That would be so difficult for me because my mom did not raise me that way. I was raised with 6 brothers and I am the only girl and she fixed me what ever I wanted. Spoiled, hugh? I really do not think I can do that to them, but I will see what I can do, especially the part if they say they are full, then they do not get anything else. I will try that for sure! Thank you

Hi all, I have 5 yr old b/g twins and they are the pickiest eaters I have ever meet, BUT they have learned that they eat what I put on the table or they don't eat. My daughter is very stubborn and she went 3 nights without dinner, and on the 3rd night she realized she ate what I gave her or she didn't eat, and she ate. I don't make them eat anything weird, but they eat salad with spinich every night, they love fruits, and they will eat carrots without to much complaint. It was tough at first, but I knew if I didn't teach them now, I would be harming them in the long run. This way there is no yelling, it's eat what's on your plate or you don't get anything else. Also, I never make them "clean" their plates. If they are full, they are done, but if they ask for something else, and they haven't finished their dinner, they finish dinner first.
It's not perfect everytime but I hope this helps

Thank you so much for sharing! I'm so sorry your grandson is going through the same thing. It sounds like he eats more than my daughter! Someone else from sparks advised me to take my daughter to a Nutrition Therapist and I'm seriously thinking about doing so! Good luck and be patient!

I'm sorry it took so long to reply. Thank you for the information! Yes I have beent thinking of taking her to a nutrionist. I pray it works, because I will be honest, we can offer her $20 to try any food and she refuses. If she refuses money imagine trying to listen to a therapist???

My 4 yr old Grandson is even worse...he won't even eat spagetti sauce! He eats noodles with butter and parm, fish sticks, chicken nuggets, mashed potatoes, mac & cheese, cheese, turkey, scrambled eggs and fries....period! I am serious, he will eat nothing else. Absolutely NO fruits or veggies (except potatoes). I feed him dinner 3 nights a week or more and I am having the hardest time. I cannot stand his eating habits. I have done everything though and it makes no difference. Every meal is turning into a fight, and he cries because he doesn't want to come to my house because I fight with him over his eating, while his Mommy lets him eat whatever.
It breaks my heart.

Wow, she sounds like my son who is six I was hoping he would grow out of it! He only eats hot dogs (rarely), pizza, waffles, apples and bananas. Every once in awhile he will eat something sweet. It is awful.

One of my friends sent her child to a 'nutritional therapist' to help him eat. You start off having the child hold the food. Then touch the food near the mouth, then lick it, eventually the child eats it. I am starting this with my son and praying it works. I can't imagine at 13 trying to sway him to eat new food!

Healthy snacks

The nonprofit group Center for Science in the Public Interest has released a list of unhealthy snacks that are commonly served in vending machines in schools, which are often 'filled with soda, candy bars, cookies, chips and other low-nutrition foods,' plus a list of more healthy choices.
Another big problem is that many kids use these vending machines and 'snacks' as an alternative for lunch.

Among the 'Worst Vending Options' are:

Chips Ahoy!, Oreo and other fatty cookies
Chocolate whole or 2% milk
Coca-Cola, Pepsi and other soda
Fruitopia, FruitWorks, and other “fruit” drinks
Hostess HOHOs and other snack cakes
Keebler Club & Cheddar Sandwich Crackers
Kit Kat Big Kat, Snickers and other candy bars
Starburst Fruit Chews and other sugary candies

Are there better options for snacks at school?

Sure. The CSPI offers these 'Better Vending Options':

Applesauce cups (unsweetened)
Bottled water
Chex Mix, Traditional
Dole or Del Monte fruit cups
Low-fat or fat-free milk
Nature Valley Crunchy Granola Bars, Oats ‘N Honey
Orange juice (100%)
Raisins and unsweetened dried fruit

And these healthy snack choices aren't just for school vending machines.

They can help guide your choices of snacks that you offer your kids at home.

I have been having my kids help me in the kitchen. I get those light and tasty books and make them pick something they want ot make for our supper. It has been going pretty good.

I would suggest seeing a Registered Dietition as a family. This is a wonderful opportunity for all of your family to learn more about eating properly (not that YOU need to but you'd be surprised at what you learn!) Your insurance may even cover it if you get a referral from your doctor (ie: your daughter's eating habits).

I am guessing she will set some goals for your daughter (try one new thing a week and journaling) and it will educate you all on portions, importance of fruits, veggies. If she's not going to eat meat an RD will tell you what she needs to eat to replace those nutrients etc.

Keep up us updated on what happens.

Is it time to sit her down with a nutritionist?

No fruits, no veggies...that's not so good, is it.

The professionals deal with this stuff all the time; use 'em!

Thank you so much for replying. I do appreciate your suggestion. That was actually in the back of my mind. I believe it is time to take her to a nutritionist! Thank you so much!

Wow! Now that's picky! The only thing I can think of is that she's old enough to reason with. What about taking her to a nutritionist and having her tell your daughter the potential consequences of the diet she is eating? I suggest an outside person because since she's 13 she may be in a frame of mind where she doesn't think you as her mom know anything, or at least that's how I was and my 13 year old neighbor is.

Help!

My daughters are such picky eaters and refuse to try anything! I have to blame myself, because the way I was raised my mom did not have me try foods that I did not want to try. I was the baby girl and had 6 brothers! I was very spoiled. So of course, when I had my kids, I did not force them either.

Now I am having a problem, especially with my oldest. Today sure turned 13 years old. She does not eat meat, fruits or vegetable, eggs, cheese by itself unless it is on pizza. No deli meat for sandwiches. I could keep going!

She likes oatmeal, cereal, oatmeal bars, hot dogs (which she is getting tire of), rice, pizza, the sauce from beans and probably a few more things like grilled cheese, mac n cheese and of course lots of junk food!

What should I do? How can I encourage her to try foods? My husband and I have offered her even money to try foods, and I'm not talking about .50 cents, I'm talking about $20 or higher and she will not do it!

Please help!
