I have an 11 year old who is also overweight,I have the same problems, I buy very healthy food, but he overeats
I don't want to be the food police and ask him how much have you eaten? any suggestions, I've also tried to get him involved in food planning and cooking. He enjoys this, but again thinks if its healthy I can eat more of it.
I'm also trying to lose weight, so we go as a family to excercise.

I thought of something else that might be fun. If each family member bought a pedometer you could see each day who got the most steps in. And the next day you may try and get more in to beat that person. Just a little family fun. You can jog in place in front of the TV to get more in. It's all moving and burning more calories than sitting down.

Hello, thank you for your response. I agree , we just got him enrolled at the local boys and girls club ,and he signed up for the basketball team. I hope he has a growth spurt , he is pretty short and his brother is 16 and 6'1.

I guess I would suggest to go and PLAY a sport with him outside if you can.
Basketball, baseball, touch football, Kick the soccor ball around. You both will burn lots of calories and have fun too.
Boxers like to jump rope.
If it's cold, go sledding (walk up the hill) ice skating, take up skiing or snowboarding.
Another idea is to get him a pedometer ($3.88 at walmart) and see if he can beat his step count from the day before. add 100 steps every day to his normal amount.

There is also a book that sounds good and I want to get too. It's called Fun family fitness by Rose Kennedy I think it's about $18. Which might have some other ideas for you too.

One last thing, he might have a huge growth spurt and all of the weight will adjust for his height. My brother was this way and slimmed up in about 9th grade.

Thanks. I do try but I am partial vegetarian ( chicken only) and no one else is ,so I cook my own meals. I try to get him to come on walks and out with me but lol of course I am a "girl" he says but yes I will work on that. We can't get him to eat a vegetable but everyone else in the family loves them with the exception of his father.

His knee is better and his asthma is only induced during being ill and now induce by exercise which the dr said would go back away when he lost a bit of weight.

I'll tell my mom what you said and work with him. I know diets are horrible ...I was a kid that was put on them by doctors when younger and they totally messed with my image.

Thanks

Unless you think his eating is truly out of control, probably the best thing you can do is to be a good model of healthy eating and exercise for him, and make sure there are plenty of good food choices available for him at home. Unless the doctor thinks it's necessary for health reasons, putting kids that age on diets often causes more problems than it solves. It's far better to try to help them learn about good nutrition and encourage them to be as physically active as possible, than to put them on a calorie counting regime.

If he does have some health issues with the asthma and sore knee, have the doctor advise you about any necessary limitations on his physical exercise. Then encourage him to be active, and try to include him as often as possible in the physical activity that you're doing as well.

Hope this helps.

My brother is 11 and during the summer weighed about 150-160 playing football and lost a bit but then hurt his knee. He was out for the rest of the season. Since he has put on atleast 20 pounds , if not more. His weight is carries all over but I am especially worried because he has alot in the chest area, I mean alot.He also has asthma and his snoring has gotten terrible. None of his new school I bought in the fall fit. I talk to him, I explain to him I know how he feels and that we will work together .

My mom fixes his plates but then he eats when we are sleeping or sneaks food from friends. I mean she told me she found a backpack full of dishes under his bed! How can my mom and I help him?
