I hear that. The ONLY thing that helps me with that people is if I exercise. That's it. I know it's hard to do but it's almost a sure-fire cure for feeling bad about the way you've been eating, etc. Easier said than done, I know.

I understand the depressed feeling also. I lose 5 lbs and gain it back. Seems like I can't get in a losing mode! One day I'm great, then sad the next. Just keep trying and think positive. It works most of the time!

hi , I can relate to what you said about letting others down, I feel that we have to do this for ourselves but others are still affected. My boyfriend is so sweet and never says a discouraging word but i know he longs for the way i was 60 pounds ago because i'm misserable being this big. It's a constant battle but I'm taking it in 24 hour incriments you know one day at a time. This approached has worked wonders in other problem area's for me so why not weight loss right. This web site is so great all the resources at your fingertips and amazingly enough it's free. So Good luck and wish me luck too. Beth

I don't think you should feel like you have failed at *anything*. It's hard to change. That's why there are places like Sparkpeople. :)

I get the same feeling. I do really good with eating better & exercising but then I slip up a few times, that turns into going back to old habits, & I end up feeling like I've made no progress.

It's easier to say than to do (b/c I'm working on this myself!), but we'll need to work on making smaller, permanent changes over time. We'll be more likely to keep those up rather than a sudden overhaul of our lifestyle.

I've found that if you change a lot all at once & then "slip up", it is easier to give up on everything. If you start with smaller goals, it's easier to get back up and keep trying.

Danni, I totally agree with the others, you are a beautiful girl & you have simply had a setback, and we can all relate to how that feels. I would like to remind you to think about the positive steps that you have taken. For instance, here you are on this website at the holidays when most people give them selves a free ticket to indulge as much as they want. Good for you. Small steps collectively can make big changes, you'll get where you're going, I'm sure of it! I also hope that you'll try to focus on reasons for yourself why you want to do this--by this I mean positive emotions & self esteem & increased flexibility or spontenaity or whatever. What I don't want you to consider is what you think those around you want. Try to focus on you, do this for Danni, not everyone else. Remember to celebrate small successes & try to enjoy the journey...feel free to visit my page anytime, hang in there, I'll be looking for you on the boards!

DANNY THIS WILL WORK FOR YOU...

THE CHALLENGE; CERTIFIED AND REGISTERED AT THE NORTH POLE:

This one is not about weight loss.
And it isn't about inches or "our individual programs" or our diet. Ain't about water or SparkPoints or miles/minutes of aerobic exercise. It's about others...

CHALLENGE NAME: "SECRET SPARKERS"

CHALLENGE PURPOSE: PROVIDE JOY AND ENCOURAGEMENT TO A FELLOW SPARKER - NOT ON OUR TEAM - WHO MIGHT BE STRUGGLING AT THIS POINT.

1. SPEND A FEW MOMENTS READING THROUGH SOME THREADS (ESPECIALLY THOSE THREADS FROM TEAMS WHERE SOME OF THE FOLKS ARE TRYING TO LOSE 100 OR 150 POUNDS)...

2. FIND A PERSON WHO IS HAVING A NOT-SO-GREAT TIME OF IT. A PERSON WHO IS FRUSTRATED WITH HERSELF AND HER LACK OF PROGRESS...

3. WRITE THAT PERSON A PRIVATE EMAIL OFFERING ENCOURAGEMENT, SOME SILLINESS, MAYBE RELATE AN INCIDENT IN YOUR OWN JOURNEY WHERE YOU WERE OVERWHELMED BY THE CHALLENGE, OR FELT A FAILURE, OR HUMILIATION, OR SADNESS. AND REMIND THE PERSON THAT SHE - JUST BY TRYING - IS A BRAVE AND HEARTY SOUL, TO BE COMMENDED. MAKE IT A SPECIAL COMMUNICATION FILLED WITH YOUR PERSONALITY, SHARING YOUR REAL SELF.

AND THAT'S IT. JUST THAT.

WE CAN TOUCH THE LIVES OF HUNDREDS OF FELLOW TRAVELERS THIS WEEK AND MAKE THE WORLD JUST A TINY BIT BETTER.

ALL BEST TO EVERYONE

Well, I hope you are feeling more upbeat today, Danielle. From your pic you look like you are a beautiful girl (lucky you!), so I agree with others who posted here, don't beat yourself up, acknowledge and appreciate your good qualities, and don't dwell on past failures - the only way to go is forward. I know what it is to lose and gain it back because I've done it many times and I've struggled with depression, as a result, as well, but I feel that I've learned so much along the way, have become a better, kinder, and more tolerant person on my journey - so, I wish you well on yours.

Danielle,
I definitely can relate to your feelings. One thing that I have learned to do is to reflect on the positive. When I have a setback, I look at it, I learn from it and I move in. To quote Jimmy Buffet(his music motivates me a great deal) "breath in, breath out, move on." I find that if I focus on my setbacks in stead of moving on, I continue to move further back. For me, being positive is the best approach.
Good wishes!

Take pride in the small accomplishments, and don't be too hard on yourself. You should be proud that you've taken this first step. Realizing we need to take charge of our lives, and loving ourselves enough to make change is the best gift we can give ourselves and those we love.

Depressed is the last straw for me, the only way is to go up and get positive

Hey Danielle,
I do the same thing as you. I get started, do well and then fall off the wagon. In 2005 I lost 40 lbs but as of my last visit to the doctor a month ago, I've gained 50 back!

It was a shock and a real dissapointment to hear that, but I'm trying to stay positive. I've analyzed what went wrong before (burnout due to too much exercize, no support in chaning my eating habits from my already thin roommates) and trying to make the changes perminent this time.

I know you feel down, but don't beat yourself up! Set some small goals (go for a walk 2 days this week, drink 8 glasses of water each day) and track them on the site. You'll feel great as you achieve each one, and then can set more challenging ones in the future.

Sending good vibes your way!

I'm a chronic dieter...I have been for the past year and a half. I get on the program (Weight Watchers--I feel it's healthiest) and I do really well..I drop 25 lbs. or so and then somehow I give up and gain it all back. I'm up to almost 225 now..which is where I started a year and a half ago. Definitely one of the more depressing feelings I've ever had. Not only that, but none of my jeans fit. I had 2 pairs that fit at this size. 1) I ripped while trying to "stretch" them to fit my thighs and 2) I noticed a HUGE stain on the second pair so those are no longer able to be worn. So until I can lose about 15 lbs. I'm stuck wearing some of my roommates old jeans from before she lost weight. I feel so bad, and like Ive let myself, my boyfriend, my roommate and my family down. Everyone who has supported me has to watch me fail myself and I hate that feeling. I don't want to go buy anymore "fat jeans" because I will (hopefully) only be at this size for a month or so. Thank you for listening, I'm not really a depressed person I'm just feeling depressed because of my weight today.
