Rainstripe, just take a piece of string...or whatever...wrap it around the area you want to measure, and then put it against the metal tape to get your final tally....that's what I do....heh......

The worst part about it is actually getting on and looking at the number. Once you do that the demon of mystery has been banished. Yes, the scale just shows a number but it can help you mark your progress if you only weigh in once a week or so.

The measurements is a great idea for me because that doesn't give me any stress at all. I can just picture myself doing that. In fact, I've been thinking of going in to one of these old style bra stores in my neighborhood where the ladies who have been fitting bras for a million years take out the tape measure and give a great fitting, no matter what the size is.

I guess I have to buy a cloth tape measure to do my other measurements. Right now I think the only one I have in the house is one of those retractable metal ones!

Instead of using the scale how about taking your measurements? Once you see yourself "shrinking" getting on the scale won't be so hard plus it's much easier to see your progress when that tape measure changes!

Measure yourself instead of weighing OR just keep track of how your clothes fit.

Take a deep breath and JUST DO IT!
Then pat yourself on the back.

I guess it's just some sort of a mental block. Even when I was skinny minny I wouldn't get on the scale. And by skinny minny I'm talking about one brief dip into great health and weight about 10 years ago, and then before I got married. I think the only time I've regularly gotten weighed, ever, was during pregnancies, and boy was it stressful.

Anyway, thanks for the input everyone and the support. I'm going to set a deadline for myself. Maybe January 1. I think just jumping on the scale is a bit too much for me, for whatever twisted reasons.

I will do it, though! That's a promise to myself. And at least, in the meantime, I'm tracking food and exercise.

Rain,
I was on WW 3 years ago and I was doing very well, so well in fact I decided I could do it without the meetings. Well you see where I am now ha-ha. When my weight started going up I got so worried about it that I threw away my scale, seriously I thew it in the burn pile and burned it. I stayed away from scales for at least 2 years and when I finally got on one again I was shocked! I bought a new one and now when I get on it I am able to look at it as a weight loss tool. I do not sweat a pound or two fluctuation from day to day, and I look forward to Friday's when I get to weigh in. I hope you can also learn to use it as a tool, it has no brain so it cannot form an opinion and mine has yet to make a face when I stand on it. It is just a thing I can use to help me in my journey. I also find the scale at the bottom of my page a very effective accountability tool.
I hope you will change your mind about it and look to all of us for support and know there is no judgement here. You are with friends.

Rain....the scale is a gauge with which to measure your progress. How are you going to know for sure if you don't check? You don't have to tell anyone what the scale reads. Use it to help you move forward and to motivate you to continue your hard work. I know when I see the scale at the same number week after week, I get discouraged, but then remember that it could have gone up. And when it does go down, oh boy! Get me to the treadmill. Good luck to you with whatever you decide.

Ok. I look with envy at most of the member's scale things at the bottom of each post - starting weight, current weight, goal weight.

I have to admit that I haven't weighed myself in over ten years. Actually that's being generous. Last time I got weighed I was pregnant with my son who is now 16.

Ugh! My doctor is a great guy who doesn't force me to get on a scale. But he did weigh me last year (I made him promise not to tell me)

I just don't know if I can get on the scale.
