Can children do SP?

It would be great if SP did set up a program for kids. They may have "very different nutritional requirements," but the fact is, in most households, kids eat what the rest of the family eats and they do just fine. School lunches are hardly exemplary of proper nutrition for kids. They really can't do much WORSE, now, can they? With so many obese children these days, I don't really see how SP could hurt. It would almost have to be an improvement over the hit or miss approach to fitness and health most kids have now.

Just my two cents as a member of SP and mom to a very athletic 18 year old and a finicky 10 year old... My 18 year old joined SP recently, but could have benefitted even more, about 5-6 years ago, when her healthy eating habits began to deteriorate. My 10 year old could benefit now. It would be great to have a program set-up tailored to his nutritional needs, and to make a game of earning points!

The Candian government has some good resorces for kids. Try the family Guild to Physical Activity For Children(http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/pau-uap/paguide/child_youth/pdf/KidsFamguideEnFINAL.pdf)

Ok,
Go to the Resource Center tab at the top.
Then to NUTRITION
Scroll down to the healthy habits section and about 3-4 down is "A parents Guide to Nutrition for kids part 1"
Here they have each food catagory, how many servings kids need, suggestions for that group, and even what a serving size looks like.
There was another one, maybe it was an e-mail sent to me. but that one broke it down even more for age groups.

Here is another couple articles Under Fitness - Under family and Lifestyle - "Expert Solutions for overweight kids" and another is "Fun family Fitness"
There is even a book called Fun family Fitness by Rose Kennedy that gives suggestions for different ages, city or rural living, summer and winter. I read about it here on SP and I am hoping to get it for Christmas.

Let me look for the article that I just saw the other day about serving sizes for kids and how many servings.

You can also get some free resources from www.mypyramid.gov. They have a couple of online games, and printable resources including the pyramid for kids, a food-tracking worksheet, and tips for families. And, by clicking on the 'online order' tab, you can even get some of the resources mailed to you, if you want larger, higher-quality copies.

Does anyone know of similar programs for children? A friend of mine has a 5 yr old daughter who is wearing size 14 pants (the same size my almost 11 yr old wears). She has stocked fresh fruit, fresh veggies, 100 calorie snacks, and the child just seems to keep gaining weight. Her mom has taken her to the doctor, the doctor says she is overweight, and mom needs to get some weight off of her. her mom has signed her up in dance classes to get her more active. Her mom has watched me with sp and wishes there was something for her daughter.

I don't know what would be wrong for them to read some of the articles. You could print one off a day for them to read. From any of the sections. One day Nutrition, another fitness, another motivation ect. Or if you want to save paper you could just bring them up on computer or even save to a file.

Dean-thanks for the insights. My girls definitly are not interested in losing wt but they are very active and wanted to see where the calories go. If anything this might actually improve their eating habits. My 12 yo saw Super-size me last year and she will no longer eat fast food except for Subway.

Hi, Janice

Our program isn't appropriate for children, due mainly to their very different nutritional requirements, so I wouldn't recommended setting up accounts for them. If they want to track the nutrition information in what they eat, without counting calories for weight loss, that could be educational for them. But you should probably supervise and work with them, and make sure you've got good information on their age-based nutritional requirements.

Hope this helps.

My girls ,ages 10 and 12, have asked to "do SP" with me. My husband has joined after seeing my results and while the girls are a healthy wt, they want to "grow strong and healthy". I think this will be more of aninformational or competition thing for them rather than a food issue. Any thoughts?
