How are you going to handle Halloween candy?

Wow! I'm really impressed, everyone sounds so diciplined. Each of my 4 kids came home after 3 hours of trick or treating with a pillowcase full of candy. 3 hours of walking was good for the exercise but now if I told them to pick out just a few pieces to keep there would be a mutiny! I've managed to dump about half of it without them realizing it, but I need suggestions for getting the other half out of my sight because I am tempted all day long as it just calls to me! I can never stop at just 1 piece and I'm sure the teachers would KILL me if I sent in bags of candy for them to keep in their lockers. Help!

Hello, Everyone:
I know this is sort of an old topic, but I did not have even ONE piece of Halloween candy this year. I don't believe in deprivation, but I know myself. And opening those flood gates for me can be a slippery slope. I just told myself that I was going to have an awesome piece of sugar-free pound cake for Thanksgiving and I popped another one of those GIANT sugar-free Spearmint LifeSavers into my mouth. I just didnt think about it. I don't know what it is, but chewing mint gum or candy puts me off craving certain things.

Also, we dont celebrate the candy fanfare of Halloween in our home. I do have two small children and we do other things like decorate pumpkins (no angry/scary faces), bake and do arts and crafts.

I hope everyone had a good time however it was spent.

There is still candy in my house too. I'm going to take the rest to work. I'm a waitress, and our staff loves candy. I'm going to eat lunch know. All this talk just made my mouth water.......

Help! There is still candy in the house and even tho' I can eat some and not go over my calorie allowance, I just want it gone. Maybe I can buy it off my kids for cash and throw it away.

I really like your ideas about getting it out of the house! I'm going to do the same because me nor the kids need it here. I will let them keep 7...that sounds like a reasonable amount! Thanks for the ideas!

After we have gone through and made sure her candy is safe, we are going to let our daughter pick through her candy and keep 7 items (1 item for each day, for 1 week) and then donate the rest to a womans shelter. Of course we will let her have 2-3 small items on Halloween because that's half the fun.

There's a dentist in my state that is buying back the candy from the kids $1 per lb. and he will be giving out toothbrushes and toothpaste. He is going to send all the candy to the troops overseas. I thought that this was kind of a neat idea.

I read somewhere that after they were done trick or treating their child was able to pick out so much candy that they wanted to keep and the rest stayed out on the porch for the "Haloween Witch" who came and took the candy and left a small toy behind. (I don't know what they did with the extra but I would have thrown it out) but I like the idea of giving it to some other charity.
I wasn't going to buy any candy to pass out since we never really get anyone that comes to our house. But hubby decided to pick some up at Kmart since it was so cheap yesterday. So know I have 2 bags of my FAVORITE (kit Kats and new Recess' cups with carmel!!!)in the cupboard. He better get rid of them pretty fast.

I'm happy to report that to date, unlike years past, I haven't bought any sweets yet, so there haven't been bags of candy calling to me from the cupboards. I'm sending my BF out tonight to get some for tomorrow night, and on Wednesday it's all going to work or being given to him for safekeeping!

My work is also doing "trick-or-treating" and I want to participate but know I won't be able to handle having a bowl of candy on my desk. So I'm planning on getting something that I don't like, such as licorise or gummy something-or-others.

We'll have some and then I'll save just a bit before shipping the rest off with dh for the front desk at his work.

After our girls go trick or treating, we head home and put everything in a pile. We only keep a little bit in the house (enough to last about a week) and the rest we put in a bag to donate to a local children's home (a local hospital is another thought).
This is a new tradition we started last year and I enjoy watching my four year old get more excited about giving it to the girls and boys who don't have anything than she does going door to door.

Have a safe Halloween!

I am not one usually to buy candy or even eat it much but if there are Snickers laying around it is going to be rough! I only allow myself one mini bar if I really must have it.( I already indulged because it is in the house for tomorrow!) That seems to satisfy my craving.

This is always hard for me too! I love chocolate. I try to keep it put away where it doesn't catch my eye - I'm someone who snacks without even noticing if food is right in front of me. My husband will put the treats up on a high shelf in our pantry so it's a lot of work to get to them! This is good for me and the kids, since we try to only let them have a couple after dinner (other than Halloween night itself, they get a few extra then!) After a week or two I take all the extra to work and share it with my co-workers!

Every year I say I will be good but then I usually end up eating more Halloween candy than I should. I have a wicked sweet tooth. How do you handle or plan to handle being around your child's candy?
