well, I just got back from a week long road trip. I always eat clean when I am on the road. since you are taking your ice chest you can even take homemade frozen dinners. So you can have all of your favorites with you as long as you keep them frozen until you get to your hotel room and just pop them in the microwave. Most moderate price and above resturants will prepare your food to taste if you make a reservation in advance. Call around and ask for a special dietary requirement dinners. It takes a little more planning but it is possible to eat healthy on the road, even disney offers healthy choices now. so don't be afraid to ask. have a safe and healthy trip.

you're right in that the comp breakfast is a carb/fat/sugar fest. before i leave for a trip, i measure a serving of Kashi go lean cereal into sandwich bag-one for everyday i'm on the road. i take this to the comp breakfast and use their milk. good hotels have fresh fruit and often, hard-boiled eggs. while you're eating your cereal, warm up a hard-boiled egg in a cup of hot water. i do this because i hate eating very chilled hard-boiled eggs.(do not use a microwave to heat a hard-boiled egg!)

by doing this, i feel i get my money's worth out of the hotels with a complimentary breakfast.

Sticking fruit and precut veggies in your cooler to snack on and buying sandwich stuff can help. Some grocery stores sell sushi, so if you like that, it can help cut the food blahs. Resturants can have really bad for you food, but you can also get food that's good for you as well. Diners might be able to make you a baked potato and steamed veggies, or a resturant might let you order off the kid's menu so if you start craving something, you can get a smaller portion. You can also do the kid's meal for fast food -- kid's meals are typically what the only/normal portion was when the fast food place started.

Hosptial food is typically not that great and not always really healthy. Large quanities produced for large numbers of people kept within a budget.

You can make complimentry breakfasts healthier. You could eat a waffle cut up with fruit and no syrup, have whole wheat toast with Peanut Butter (nuts will help to keep you feeling fuller longer), half a muffin if you're feeling like one that morning, or cereal and skim milk. And if they have fruit, snag some extra pieces to eat as you drive.

If you have to do fast food, subway, wendys grilled chicken, and Arbys grilled chicken aren't bad. You can get a nutrition listing at any place you go and find what is in your range. Also put some salads made up in your cooler. I will say stay out of anything even resembling a truck stop (Flying J, Loves, TA etc). They are way bad restraunts. There really aren't many options while traveling. Just keep count and be careful. Good Luck

I'll be on the road travelling for several weeks. I am trying to stay totally away from fast food restaurants for sure. Some days I am driving 10 hours or more so I've brought along a cooler for drinks, fruit etc.

Instead of restaurants I have been trying to go to regular grocery stores that have prepared salads etc. or even get a frozen entree to cook up whenever I can find a microwave. In some small towns that isn't even a possibility.

The complimentary breakfasts at hotels is usually disaster.....muffins, waffles, maybe some fruit.

Someone also suggested eating at hospital cafeterias also. The chance for healthy choices seems better there, although this hasn't actually proven out to me.

Does anyone else have good suggestions for eating better while on the road? This trip is three weeks! I'll be so glad to get home!
