I have the same problem that I eat like crazy at night! What I try to do is really fill up on TONS of veggies and glasses of water at dinner. Then after I allow a small treat. It also really helps if you brush your teeth imediately after you are done eating. Good Luck!

For me, I have to measure all my portions during my meals otherwise I go overboard. I have also changed the size of my plate, I buy the regular size dixie paper plates (I think they are 10"), we use paper during the week and the good stuff on the weekend . Which with my measured protein, veggie and starch it fills the whole plate up. Then right after my meal I allow myself a small snack (for me its chocolate, usually a fun size candy bar or Hershey Stick). This is my signal that I am done eating for the evening.
As far as salty snacks go, make individual serving packets of goldfish crackers, pretzels, popcorn, Kellogg's makes a Sweet and Salty snack bar under 200 cal. etc. and allow yourself this snack each day. Its cheaper to make your own than to buy the prepackaged individual ones.
You just have to keep trying things and figure out what works for you, its a lifestyle change.
Oh and try chewing gum or drinking water while your cooking. I hope at least one of these suggestions helps you. Good luck and don't give up!

I've finally conquered my mindless snacking at work. I did this by drinking tea at breakfast and eating a high-fiber cereal. For that 3 o'clock slump, I keep a piece of fruit at my desk. oranges seem to work best because I can mindlessly chew on the pieces as I work at my computer.
But I'm so good at portion control during the day, I end up gorging on carbs at night. How do you keep it together throughout the day?
I think there's some hope for me. Last night, while I gorged on homemade beer-battered chicken strips, I also had asparagus and basmati rice with almond slivers. At least I didn't go for ice cream or any snacks afterwards because I was so full. But I need to figure out how to keep my portion control in check throughout the day.
I also find that I crave salty things at night, especially if I haven't had anything salty all day. This has abated somewhat since I started to drink over 2 liters of water a day. However, the temptation is there when I wait for my dinner to cook and there's a bag of salty chips nearby.
