Thank you all for you input, i will give them a try and see how he likes them. It helps to have other moms who have gone through this. Again, thank you ladies.

Book stores, Target and K-mart have workbooks for each grade level. I bought one for my daughter last year when she was in Kindergarten to help with her numbers (she was getting her 6's and 9's mixed up and her 7 backwards). It had A LOT of cool stuff in it like dot to dots and such that she ended up doing on her own - then she had me "check" them. She loved it!

Maybe he would like to learn a language, they have tapes and such he could listen to (Spanish, French, etc).

Oh, and I think it was Pixtar (a hand held game) that came up with games that promote learning. They can either do it on the small screen or hook it up to a tv and see it in a larger version. There were number games and letter games, I know you said you don't like video games but these were educational.

We've had one of those science kits from Target. My son loved it.

I have a second grader who sounds a lot like your child. I enrolled my son in guitar lessons and also in karate. He can then practice both of these at home and the karate classes help him get some physical activity as well. My son is also a big fan of science kits. You can find them at Target or Toys r us. They have everything you need to do some fun science experiments. Computer games are fun too if you put time limits on how long your child can play them. I also find that if I give my child time to get a little bored, he comes up with some really imaginative games on his own.

There are all sorts of worksheets you can find online. Just type in things like math worksheets, printing sheets, etc. The biggest thing is to encourage the reading. If they can read they will do well.

I have a 6 year old who is in the first grade, and loves it. When he gets home he wants me to give him math worksheets and teach him sign language. Its like he can't get enough school. I know i am not the only parent out there that has kids like that, but it seems odd to me. He loves sports, but we are in western wa, and it rains alot here so we do inside activities. I should just be glad he isn't stuck in front of the tv or video games. lol. If anyone has some school activity ideas, please let me know.
