Depression over anything is very difficult to overcome and can consume your life if you let it. Whenever you start to feel depressed about weight loss or anything immediately stop what you're doing and get up. Do something active, take deep breaths and try to clear your head of every thought. depression runs in my family and I have dealt with it all of my life and will continue to. Just learn to recognize when it's coming on and stand up to it. Don't let it in!!

Want2beslim - I did my ititial weight loss all wrong and I was very stupid.

I would not suggest anyone do what I did. I lost 40 pounds in 40 days, 60 pounds in 60 days.

I almost went over the edge when I hit a period where I didn't lose any weight for a week.

I finally had to step away from the scale. Like I said, I no longer weigh myself too often. It almost took me down a very dark path.

You can see that my weight loss has slowed down to something safe and sane. And I feel much better about what I am doing.

I am also switching fat to not-so-fat...( But I still don't have a good execise routine except for walking.....:)

1SONII, Wow!

If my math is correct, you lost about 82 pounds in 6 months. That's awesome! What was your program?

I want to encourage you. On March 15th, I tipped the scales at 298 and I could see that big 300. The doctor said I had diabetes and all my blood scores and blood pressure would have floored you. By the end of the month I had convinced my self to start a weight loss program.

This morning I weighed in for the first time in about a month ( I had a problem with being obsessive about the weight scales)

I was down to 216.. 82 pounds in 6 months. You can reach your goals if you focus on the little things and let the big things take care of themselves.

I started with baby steps. I couldn't walk 5 minutes or 5 blocks. walking is my main exercise. You can do this, check out the Spark People success stories.

Some day, your story will be there too.

I know what you mean when you have a big goal it can be depressing but with great support like the people here it really helps. I had a major set back with some meds. I have to take and it caused me to gain 7 pounds in one week and that was very depressing. As of today I am trying to get back on the right track now. Thanks again Spark Friends

Hi KM,

I noticed your first post where you said you need need lose 70 pounds by next year. I understand that seems like it is so far away and unattainable. But if you want it you'll get it.

Get this. Recently, I took a class called Strategies for Success and it changed my attitude on many things in life. Even though this class is geared towards obtaining a successful career, there are many other things in life where I was able to apply what I learned. For instance we had this once chapter on motivation. There were three types of motivation. Let me share them with you. Two are coercive motivation and restrictive motivation. This is motivation where you feel like you "have to"(or are pressured to) do a certain thing to get the results that you're looking for. Constructive motivation is when you "want to" do what it takes to get the results you want. You desire, choose to, want to, love to. I know it sounds corny but I tried this approach when it comes to this weight struggle. I have been up and down with my weight for years but I have to say that since I changed my attitude about it, I have not been the same. Because at the end of the day there's not much in life that we absolutely "have to" do. We make certain decisions in life because we want a certain result. For example I don't work because I "have to" I work becuase I "want to". Because I don't want to struggle, I enjoy having my own money, whatever my reason is for working I do it becuase I want the end result. Before I took that class I certainly thought I "had to" go to work. Well, now I understand I really don't "have to". I could actually just lie there in bed and wake up when I want to and lounge around the house or whatever. But I don't want the conscequences of it. Unpaid Bills, minimal food, etc. Anyways I say that to say this. And I hope I do not sound preachy because I don't mean to be. But for me and for many others in this weight struggle it's about attitude. At least that's where it begins. Our attitudes must change first, then our lifestyles much change. I don't think of exercise as a "have to" anymore. It's now on my "want to" list because I want to see 135 one day. I know that I will not reach my goal if I don't do what it takes to get there. And I know I won't truly be committed if I always think of it in terms of "have to". I learned in the class that it's human nature to subconciously push back when we feel like we're being pushed or pressured. So as long as I feel like I "have to" I'm going to push back in some way or another. Now when I get up in the morning, I get up before work and walk no less than 2 miles because I "want to". I "want to" because I want the result. When I go to a restaurant I "want to" be mindful of my calorie content because I know it matters when it comes to reachiing my goal. So I "want to" make the right choices when I eat out. I could go on and on but I don't want to take up the whole thread, but I would say "be encouraged". Consider the "want to" frame of mind and see how it works for you. It will probably be a gradual process but I know you will succeed.

Hey Kandra,

Sounds like we are in the same boat! Perhaps we can provide some support and motivation for eachother.

You may want to break the goal into smaller segments. Sometimes looking at the big picture can be daunting and depressing but looking at a goal of 5 pounds is more managable. You can also join a challenge so you have some buddies to keep you on track. I know there were a few 10% challenges (which for 70 pounds would be a 7 pound goal) and a few "the next 5/10 pounds" challenges. You can do it, it's just going to take some time.
