Hi Amanda- In no way am I an expert on autism but I did work for awhile with 9-12 year olds with communication disorders including autism in a classroom. We used a lot of rewards for completing activities and appropriate behavior in our classroom but sometimes a time out away from the other kids was appropriate because it allowed the child to calm down and regain composure. I would ask the teacher what are all the different methods that are used in the classroom for behavior - good and bad - and try to implement the same ones at home so there will be consistency between the two places - something that is extremely important to an autistic child as I am sure you know!

Hello my name is Amanda. I am the mommy of Joshua a wonderful 3 1/2 year old little boy with high functioning autism. He is very good, but is starting preschool and I would like to tell his teachers an alternative to time out to use, if they should ever have to. The thing is I am not sure exactly what to tell them. We really don't have rules at home and Josh has never done anything "bad" that I can recall but I just dont think that he would understand the concept behind time out. Please help!
