My two biggest obstacles are my love of snacking, and the lack of time to exercise. I have a habit of eating all day every day. I have started substituting chewing trident gum, which helps a lot.

As for exercising, I will just have to make some lifestyle changes. For example, I had extra time this am, and folded laundry. If I had used my exercise bike or ablounger instead, I could have posted it here!

hello just read the post from msilvernail. may i make a suggestion for this winter? go to walmart and look with the exercise equipment and youll find so much you can do at home. my absolute favorite cost me 25.00 for a mini trampoline. i love the thing. it sits in the living room, right in front of the tv. i watch music videos and just walk to the beat. so it varies from fast to slow. i also watch tv and either walk during the commercials only or during the show only. also get a pedometer. they are cheap at walmart and it is a real motivator. i will bet you will be surprized at how much you walk in a day. hope these suggestions help. i live in central texas and we dont have to worry about bad weather too much, but i love the cool days and nippy evenings we do get. lol andra

We are on a budget, a tight one at that. Message Posted by: JENNRN2006 - 8/27/2006

That is a tough one.I am divorced with 4 kids and some weeks I have $100 to get us through the week. We had hamburger helper yesterday as a matter of fact. buying yogurt and things like that are so expensive when you have to buy about 35 of them!
do you have any farm markets near by? I live in Phlly and near the italian market and they have produce for really cheap. Tomatoes 50 cents a pound, eggplant for .99 you get the idea. Shopping there when I have time really helps.

My biggest obstacle is how to buy the right foods. We are on a budget, a tight one at that. I just graduated RN school {as I am sure you all know by now ha ha}but not working at this time. our bills eat up most of the money. So our list of foods are stuff like hamburger helper, tuna helper, mac and cheese and sandwiches. You get the picture. I know what to buy but my obstacle is paying for it.

It is so hard to pick just one thing...

Feeding small children food that they will eat - my 2 y/o will NOT touch any of the SparkPeople recipies I have fixed, *sigh* - means having yummy, but high-cal foods around. Both kids are on the skinny side, since I always tried to feed them better than I was eating, lol, and need a certain amount of fat. I made them banana choc-chip pancakes for breakfast and had to remember not to eat random scraps while cooking.

Winter. I fell off the wagon last year when it started getting cold and raining/snowing. I didn't want to take the baby and toddler out in it and making it to the mall to walk was a big hassle. I am already thinking up strategies for this winter. I know this will get easier as they get older, but I don't want to stay fat that long, lol.

Being "bad" is fun. Or so my mother trained me to think. Too bad being "bad" always involved rich foods...

It went really well!! I didn't have near the problem that I thought I was going to have. There was volleyball and a bunch of other activities to do so I participated in those and it totally kept my mind off of the drinking. Everyone had a blast!! (We never did look at Mars tho. LOL)!
Thanks so much for everyone's advise and thoughts. Much appreciated!

Boredom has always been my biggest obstacle in the past, that is boredom with my food choices while trying to lose weight. I tried to eat food that was too plain and was ultimately unsatisfying.

I read an article on a website just before finding SparkPeople which basically said not to think of certain foods as 'bad', just don't give them that label. As long as you can stay within your calorie/fat/carb/protein ranges, don't be afraid of making your food interesting!

I'm hoping this advice will help me get past my personal obstacle.

I work nights and seem to snack a lot during that time. It's like I absolutely need to be eating, even if I am not hungry . . . . . . Rita

I too have given up alcohol completly. Tonight will be my first real test with that. I am going to a "View Mars Party". Everyone is going to be trashed but me. Wish me luck!

Good luck with that. It's really hard when you see everyone else letting loose. you could have a diet coke with rum for few caloires or lite beer but I find it's better to just abstain due to the bloating ,dehydration etc. How did it go for you?

yes, food food food. Actually, as the mom, I get to cook the food so not tasting it, not having some before the meal (or not eating at mealtimes as I've already eaten while cooking).

Good luck at the Party just keep focused on your goals and you will be fine. Also being sober has a few advantages you can laugh at their antics and take pleasure in reminding them of what they got up to the next time you see them. Also you will have 100% no chance of a horrible hangover. Hope it goes ok.

For me it has been a combination of working nights and snacking the entire time I am at work, not doing any physical activities unless it required food or alcohol and drinking almost every weekend. I too have given up alcohol completly. Tonight will be my first real test with that. I am going to a "View Mars Party". Everyone is going to be trashed but me. Wish me luck!

Munching while I cook dinner. I try to remember to drink water, but by the time dinner rolls around I am already hungry and it's hard not to snack on what I'm cooking!

My husband working nights, because I don't want to go to bed. And having children you can't stay in bed to make up for your long nights. So therefore, I'm dragging my overweight butt to do my work out!!!!

Time. I really don't have the time to exercise anymore, now that my DH's work schedule has changed and I've started school. Luckily, though, a friend is giving me a treadmill tomorrow so now I can exercise at my house while my son sleeps...yay.

Oh, and chocolate...mmmm.

What's your biggest obstacle?

- Message Posted by: MOTIVATION07 - 8/25/2006

Hmmm potato chip sused to be my biggest temptation and greatest addition of calories. I haven't had them in awhile because I go crazy and can't stop. Just like the commercial ha.Alcohol is another bcuz my friends drink a few nights out of the week. So I've cut out the alcohol altogether. Now I think my biggest obstacle is my own negative self talk. It's so hard to stay focused when it seems I'm not getting results. I just have to push through it, I guess.

My job. I'm a cook/cashier and I'm around food the whole 10 hours.

We cook great burgers and fries, fried chicken, chicken strips, livers/gizzards, burritos, egg rolls, corndogs, okra, mashed taters, biscuits with sausage, bacon, egg, cheese or any combination, plus gravy.

You name it. Almost any kind of fried fast food, we have it.

Eating while im watching my favourite tv shows. Its weird, if i am just watching the news or something, i am fine, but when my favourite shows come on, i feel like i need a snack. Ill even wait until the ads are over to start eating it. And because all my shows are on at night it makes it hard to not eat away my life before bed.

Time.

Keeping up with my job requires 50-60 hours per week. My husband travels 75-80% of the time, and I have two young children to care for. I volunteer once a week in my older son's classroom, and have other "Room Mother" responsibilities. My older son, in first grade, has at least an hour of homework every night. Thankfully, my commute is comparatively short for my area, but weeknights we still don't get home until 6:00pm.

Then it's the mad dash - homework, dinner, bath, storytime, bedtime, more work for me, plus dishes, cleaning, laundry - whatever else needs doing around the house, and, somehow, bed for me.

Cramming an official workout into that onced seemed impossible. I certainly cannot go to a gym. I have found ways to make the time, but it still requires a conscious effort. Some days, it would be so much easier to skip it and start again tomorrow.

But then I remember how just a few years of skipping it "today, just today, I promise I'll get back to it tomorrow" let me get to my high weight. I am not going back there. I'll make the time - at least some of it - somewhere, somehow, even when it's a huge challenge.

Lately I have the boys doing modified versions of my cardio with me. They are still young and untainted enough to see it as fun, and it gives us some time together that isn't so heavily focused on work and schedule.

Work is also my biggest obstacle. I work in a large department where the majority of staff are female.
Every day there seems to be a birthday, or a celebration and these always mean cakes and lots of them. I am sure somedays there are cakes just to celebrate the fact it is tuesday or the sun is out. It wouldnt be a problem if i had the strength to resist but i think i have an invisible magnet which pulls me towards the cakes (chocolate eclair's especially!!)

My definition of "fun". It looks like I can only have fun when there's food around. A fun night out for me includes a nice dinner. A fun party for me has to have good food. Whenever we go out, I'm really looking forward to the eating part. I think I need to learn how to have fun whithout the food element. It's just that I enjoy it too much, it's one of my pleasures (and dh is pretty much the same, so that's another problem).
