I have done daycare in my home for 17 years so I could be on the same schedule as my kids. I thought when my son was fixing to start kindergarten that I'd change to a different career choice but came upon the same problem with school hrs and also my job would always come second to husbands...I'd have to be there for sick kids and dr appts which would put any job at risk. I decided to start up my home daycare again. I love the children...The parents are terrific and what better job could you have than that of staying home being able to be there for your kids and husband, cook dinner, housework ect and not having to do it after work, play playdough, color pictures, read story books, build towers with blocks and after all this GET PAID FOR IT! The pay is more than minimum if you do it right, and better than alot of jobs above minimum wage if you take it to the max. I only do full time only--pay whether you're here or not, and I take on 6 kids at $90 a week. (and I'm in a low paying area) Looking for something where you'll get off earlier...then do a preschool program in your home where children are only there from 8:30 to noon and get liscensed and you can usually keep 12 kids. Want off on all the schedules of the kid's holidays ect...then take on teachers and school staff kids....tell them you'll be closed when the school is closed and there's no charge for those days. The teacher's love a policy like that and you'll have a waiting list of teacher's waiting to get in as soon as word gets out. Good luck to you all:)

I am a single mom, I worked as a manager for a fast food restaurant for 10 years and the crazy schedule got to be too much with a baby. So then I went back to school for 4 years to get my degree, had a baby during that time, and set my expectations high for the types of job offers I would accept. Finally after 3 months of interviews and turning jobs down I have found the perfect job.
I have daycare for both kids from 6 to 6. I refuse to work nights, weekends, or holidays. If I am going to put that much time into school then I am going to get a job that gives me a life with my kids.
I prayed and prayed and looked and looked and finally through a friend that I went to school with I found the perfect job.
So keep looking, find exactly what you want, if you believe that prayer helps, pray.
I wish you luck.

Well ive applied for lots of weekend jobs and im hoping to get the ASDA job weekends and a few late evenings plus 1 or 2 full days. All i have to do if i get that is pay £7.50 for an afternoon day care at my daughters nursery. so fingers crossed i get that 1. I really do want to work,, i enjoy the challenge and the extra income as do my kids . Only disadvantage is that i will at somepoint be going to work as my hubby comes in from work. and he also doesnt work at the weekends whereas i will be if i get the job.

Hi everyone~
I faced this problem, too. When I was married I was still a single parent. My ex was no help and gambled away his paycheck. I could not work opposite his work schedule because I could not count on him to take care of the kids while I was gone. So, I went to work for the school district. I am off with my children all evenings, weekends and school holidays. It works for me. There are a variety of hours available from part time to full time and it easy to work around your kids that way. I am a teacher's assistant, but cafeteria helper is usually less hours and about the right time frame to work while your one child is in daycare. Good luck!

This suggestion depends on why you need to work. If you need to work for the money it won't help. But if you need to work to get some grownup interaction going or to maintain skills until the kids are all in full day school you might consider volunteering. You can set your own hours and make sure you're home so you don't need extra daycare.

Hi! I'm new to sparkpeople and am trying out the message boards for the first time. Your topic caught my attention. I've struggled through the same thing. I think it depends on what type of work you are looking for, and what childcare arrangements you can make. It is tough, but I think more & more employers are realizing that they need to be flexible. Look for openings at a local gym, maybe as a part-time receptionist or even in their childcare room? Some retail stores will let you work evenings and weekends. You might wind up with fewer hours at first, but that will change over time. Be patient, and look for a boss/employer who is willing to work with you in creating a realistic, flexible schedule that will work for everyone. Good luck!

I'm facing the same thing right now. I want a part-time job so I can be there for the kids after school but they are very hard to come by. If anyone has any suggestions I would love to hear them!

ive been trying to find a job thats fits in with the hours my children go to school.

my eldest will be going to secondary school 8.30 -3.15

my middle child goes to school from 8.45 - 3.15

and my youngest goes to nursery school from 8.45 - 11.20am

my hubby works, and i want a job. infact i need a job.

the hours i want are in the same time scale as my youngest child's nursery hours and also evenings and weekends... finding these hours is a nightmare.. the company either wants shift work or part time hours ,, i need at least 20 hours,, is there anyone that also has to struggle because they cant get the hours they need?
