We just experienced this in our family. My sisters grandson. Born at 25 weeks, 1 pound 10 ounces, 11 inches long, he could fit in my hand. It was scary for awhile but doctors and medicine nowadays are amazing.
He just had his 1 year birthday party, crawling, standing at the coffee table, just about ready to walk, with a little help he "climbed" into his birthday cake, you absolutely cannot tell by looking at him that he started life the way he did.
Amazing.

This is an update on my grandson. He is doing so much better. He is responding and "talking", laughing, playing & observing his surroundings. This is a total turnaround. He is actually pleasant to be around. His breathing is also much better. On Sunday he will be 10 mo. old so given several more months he will no doubt make much progress. Thank you to all that gave such encouraging words.

That puts things in perspective. He is 9 mo. old and just now starting to roll over. Just in the last couple of weeks his personality is changing...almost like a lightbulb came on. He is now interested in eating, playing, books that are read to him, their dog & things going on around him. Something seems to have clicked. It gives me hope now that all the work is going to pay off. Your name is a good one for a premie, spitfire is probably what my grandson will be too.

I myself was a premie. I was only 6 weeks early, but I guess back in 1975 that was really early. Anyway, I have a friend who had a baby girl almost 2yrs ago. She was 10 or 11 weeks early. NICU for months and not expected to live. She'll be 2yrs old this fall and has caught up completely! She is truly a miracle as they were trying to conceive for 11yrs.
I DO remember her telling me that the doctors and physical therapists told them to gage her progress by when Shyanne was SUPPOSED to be born. So, when she was about 8 months old she was just starting to learn to do things that your average 5.5-6mo old would be learning to do.

Actually I was living in another state at the time but have now moved fairly close to them. My daughter-in-law woke with a SEVERE headache and my son took her to the ER. Her BP was so high that they did an emergency C-section. She was in bad shape for several days. The baby was in the NICU for about 5 1/2 months. When one walks thru there you have to believe in miracles. Thank you for all the helpful info. You're a blessing.

...did she have a torn placenta known as abruptio?? That is awesome that he is responding as well as he is...i was very surprised that he was crawling...that is a VERY good sign that he is starting to rollover...remember that everything will be delayed acording to when the actual due date would have been...
...i was 38 when my son was born and at 17 weeks i started to bleed profusely...the doctor told me i had lost it...and we live in a small town where ultrasound is only available a coulple of days a month...i sobbed my heart out....i was admitted to hospital and several days later i knew i was still prego when they brought lunch, lifted the lid and the smell made me puke...it was the best puke i ever had..LOL ...well anyway...the following spring i delivered an 8lb 3oz bundle of pure joy...and he is as normal as they come!!! ...most doctors will not give you a prognosis...because they aren't sure so they try to PREPARE you for the worst... ...stimulate him in every way possible...physically, emotionally, nutritionally, and it will give him every opportunity to be the best he is capable of...

No, there wasn't time to do anything I guess. My daughter-in-law had to have an emergency C-section to save her life. The Drs. almost lost her but God had other plans. She is doing fine. He isn't crawling but has just started to roll over. They have nurses to take care of him while they work. He gets lots of attention. Just in the last couple of weeks he is smiling alot.

| ...so your grandson was about 26 weeks gestation?? I beleive in miracles too and if he is crawling that is a VERY good sign...26 weeks is quite early...was there any warning of an early delivery...if so the doctors may have given the mother a steroid so that the babies lungs could get the hormone(surfactant) (?spelling) to help them expand...i am an lpn...but was in a delivery of a 30 week gestation where the mother did have the steroid and the baby cried on its own immediately and is just fine...at that gestation every day counts...it is awesome that he is crawling...there is nothing more healing than a grandmothers love...

| Some preemies will remain on the smaller side. My friend's daughter who was born at 24 wks is small but she makes up for it in spunk. Wishing your family well!

Thanks so much for the feedback! I have a daughter that was born with multidisabilities. She of course was very delayed. She walked at age 9yrs. and is now 21 and is still total care. Although she is very delayed she has personality....plus. She is also nonverbal but she gets her wants known. The Drs., when she was born didn't expect her to live and to always be a "vegetable"( I HATE for a human to be referred to that way ). She is the cutest hot veggie you've ever seen! I do believe in miracles! My grandson is one too.

| I was a preemie, I only weighed 3 pounds at birth. I don't know if you could classify me as normal. since I'm not to good at being a follower. I usually do just the opposite of what the crowd does but I think that has more to do with my personality than the fact that I was born 2 months early. So I am sure your grandson will be just fine.

|
| From what I remember reading, usually by the time they are two, you can't really tell they were premies.

| Thank you for responding. Your words are encouraging. He is a dear little guy but seems to cry alot. The pediatrician never says anything about there being a problem. I had 6 kids but none were premies. They all did things at their own pace but as I'm around him I just wonder if he'll catch up. My love doesn't depend on him being "normal" he has already won my heart.

| My husband was a preemie - not expected to live over night, let alone to be 36! He was "supposed" to be small and maybe a little slow - but he's 5'10", got an MBA, started on a PhD and runs our business. Just keep the faith that your grandbaby will be just fine :)

| if he had no brain damage, he should. one thing i was taught about premies, is that you should always gage there development by their due date, not their birth date. so three months early, and at 9 mo old now, his development should be that of a 5-6 month old. wich is about when they are rolling around, not quite crawling. so i would THINK your grandson, is actually on target. has his pediatrition said any different? i do not have any premies, but i work with lots of kids, and have done some reading up on premies. God Bless, kim

My grandson was born at 6 1/2 mo. and weighed just over 2 lbs. He was given a very low percentage of living. He is now 9 mo. old an is just starting to roll. Also, he has finally made it to 12lbs. Although he is still on oxygen, breathing treatments, some tube feedings, several meds. etc, I wonder if he will catch up to other "normal" kids someday.
