I definitely use food as a coping mechanism. I gained 45 pounds during my first pregnancy last year. I lost 35 pounds due to breastfeeding and delivery. I couldn't seem to lose the last 10 but I looked pretty good and could fit into most clothes, so I just kept working at it, hoping it would come off eventually. But it didn't. Then I lost my job and used food to cope with the issues surrounding that, and I gained 10 more pounds. Now I feel just awful, and for the first time in my life my doctor has told me I am overweight. So here I am on Sparkpeople hoping for some support and success!

| I have had the same problem. Recently, my ee has got alot better because I realized I had some heavy issue to address. If I didn't take of that I would still be on major binging. However, it doesn't happen overnight. And it's really hard to change. I'm still working on it.

I think that my picture may be in the dictionary next to the term "Emotional Eater" (hahaha) This is my biggest challenge on SP. I know I need to change my addiction to food as comfort if I am going to make a lifestyle change. I never had the help to do this before and I think SP is the key and our supporting eachother. But don't be your worst enemy, if you have a bad day, don't beat yourself up about it, that will only make you eat more. Own up to the fact, find where your mistake was, and do better the next day. So what if you had cake at someones party, we're not dead we still enjoy food. Don't forget to love life on they way to becoming that thinner you!

*raises hand* I do it, too! I eat from stress, sadness, frustration and boredom.
I'm trying really hard to curb it and/or make better choices. Sometimes I'll have a cup of tea with milk and sugar - a nice calming and filling treat that doesn't do HUGE caloric damage...

| That is always my first impulse as well. I KNOW that it only hurts me tho and am getting to the place where I can remind myself of that and resist. I also have learned to leave and go for a walk and that helps too.

| it takes lots of training yourself and disciplin to stop eating like that. i found that when i get upset, instead of going to the fridge, i leave the house for a walk, or get on the computer and play solitare. something that will occupy your mind.

| I recently discovered im an emotional eater = meaning I find myself eatting more/binging when i get upset. Especially if i get upset with my husband, it's almost like i do it on purpose though. And when it comes down to it i'm only hurting myself....what's up with this?
