Better to Eat Before or After a Workout?

It depends on what your workout consists of, I guess.

I'm at the gym twice a day. In the morning, I do cardio, and in the evening, I do weight training. For the morning cardio workout, I usually eat before, although what my breakfast consists of can hardly be considered food. I start my day off with a Designer Whey protein shake and a diet Sobe No Fear energy drink. It's roughly a hundred calories.

As for the evening weight training workout, I usually do the following: 30-40 minutes before a workout, I make a shake with two scoops of NO Xplode (creatine + caffeine + whatever other random stuff they threw into it) and drink it on an empty stomach. After the workout, I drink a MuscleTech Cell-Tech creatine shake (which includes 75g of sugar) and another Designer Whey protein shake. I also eat about 9oz of chicken breast; a slower protein than whey.

I usually eat 2hrs before a workout of either kind, and then either right after (weights) or an hour later (cardio). I've heard that the fat burning happens after you work out with cardio, so not eating forces your body to use some of that stored fat. The timing works for me anyway based on when I can work out and eat dinner.

Eating before really depends on what your doing. If you are going to be expending a lot of energy and are doing resistance training it would be good to have some food for energy before your workout. If your doing cardio I wouldn't bother. Post workout nutrition is essential and it is best to use a 2:1 carb- protein ratio. I know that many people that are trying to lose weight will shy away from using carbs after a workout but they are needed. When your working out you start to use your muscle glyocogen storage. After a workout you want to replenish these stores. A plus from this is that a simple sugar will rush nutrients into your system, so it will help push the protein in. So, for a 200 pound person it would be advisable to have about 70 simple carbs and 35 grams of protein. This is also a good time to have a cheat, like a can of pop or something of the like, as your body wants high GI sugars. Here's a pretty in depth article by Dr. John M Berardi, Ph.D.

Both and during. I break my meals into small 150 to 300 calories and eat closely to perscribed times. This lends itself to eating about every 2-3 hours. As a firefighter, I would eat on the way, during, and after an event. I kept food bars handy on the truck and would shove a few bites in just before arrival, when I got a break, and certainly after. I applied this to my workouts. I find I can be more stable and focused if fueled and hydrated, especially hydrated. The science is...well...how would I know?

It depends. If I'm climbing and I don't eat something before the workout, I'm fried halfway and my muscles are screaming out for something. So if I know I'm climbing then I'll save my little box of peanuts and raisins that I bring for lunch and have it a couple of hours before the workout. And a normal dinner afterwards, maybe slightly biased towards more protein. The same is true if I'm playing squash that day too, although that's normally a lunchtime thing so I have my lunchtime banana/fruit before playing.

Wierdly, when doing badminton/cardio/weights, I normally don't eat anything beforehand. Just make sure I'm properly hydrated (and that my headphones work after putting them in the laundry) and off I go! Again, normal dinner afterwards.

I have read SOOOOO much on this topic and I think it really comes down to personal choice. I have worked out with food in my system and without and I have a better cardio workout with a little protein, fruit and water .. then workout 40 minutes later. It's interesting to read what works for everyone : )

I usually try and eat a little bit before I work out, about an hour or so before Ill try and have something small, like a little bowl of cereal or something before, and then lunch right after.

But that's just my personal preference.

I like to have some calories to keep me going during the exercise. Then some protein to rebuild the muscles.

I usually wait an hour or two before I exercise and then I'll eat right after. Its usually protein to help the muscles grow. Have a great night.

Just curious what you guys think.....I know it's most likely a personal preference, but I feel like my workout goes a lot better if I wait and eat after I'm through. I usually drink a cup of coffee on the way to the gym/track and thats about it. After I take a shower, I usually eat a couple of hard boiled eggs and off to work I go. How do you guys feel about this?
