I have recently started taking belly dancing classes. It is a lot of fun and a great work out. It is very good for your core muscles. It helps with your lower back also. I have found myself contracting my stomach muscles subconsciously. I enjoyed it so much that I talked my girlfriends into taking the classes also.
I would suggest taking the it at a class because it is important to have the right stance.
Another great plus about belly dancing, it improves your self-esteem. It's all about empowering women.

| I love belly dancing. I definatley agree that if you have the opportunity to take a class that that is the best and most fun way to learn. If your like me and can't attend a class there are some great videos out there. I have the goddess dolphina beyond the basics workout. I got it from amzon. she also has a beginners dvd. If you do a beginner video I wouldn't count it as cardio because your heart rate isn't really getting elevated. It definately could be counted as strength training. It really helps you to build all the muscles in your body ( especially your abs).

| I took bellydancing classes a couple years ago. I would strongly suggest finding a class to attend as the instructor can make sure you are in proper posture and moving the correct way. It is also more fun with lots of people and a great motivator. We had so many laughs.

| There are actually quite a few bellydancers on here. There are tons of videos on the market but it would probably be best to find an actual class to take. shira.net is a wonderful resource and has a listing of teachers on her site as well as video reviews. There is also a bellydance Sparkteam.

| Once I was watching Oprah, and Kirstie Alley was on saying that she had lost much of her weight from bellydancing. Has anyone tried it? Is there a video or anything???
