Whatever you set your mind to Russ, you can do it : ) You have strength and determination .. and most importantly, if things don't go as planned, you move forward and don't get caught up on "should have's, could have's". I'm backing you 100%!

Put the beer down? You really ARE crazy, crazy4blues! ;)

I just joined the "Beer lovers" Spark team, because that's one sacrifice I don't want to make. *laugh*

Monday is my day off from working out, since I work all day (10 hours), then I head home, prep for my volunteer gig (radio show), then head down to the station to do said show. Often-times I don't get out of the station before about 11pm, which gives me enough time for a beer or two before hittin' the hay. The only way I could fit in a workout is if I were to get up early and hit the gym before work. But I'll be damned if I'm getting up any earlier than 6am on a Monday morning. ;)

Anyway, congrats to you on your 20-day streak, Russ, and good luck beating it this time around! I'm sure you will. My best effort was 26 or 27 (non-consecutive) days in one month. I'm shooting for 25 days this month.

I usually take off Thursday and Friday to get some rest and give my muscles a break. I work 2 full time jobs, so my body needs the R&R. I also, am making it a point to eat "lite" on those days and really increase my water content, to take away the hungry feeling. Another thing I've started doing is not eating past 6pm in the evening...it was TOUGH the first few days, but then my body, metobalism, etc. adjusted and now I'm fine.

Yup, that's what this is about, Russ: getting off of the couch, putting the beer down, and gettin' your sweat on. Me, I don't consider myself lazy; I just HATE hard work . . .

The thing for me is the fun factor, and that's where the bike comes in. Also the iPod. It's great that we live in such a great age of technology and information; there's simply no more excuses. Heck, in the latest Mountain Bike mag, there was a review of a pair of sunglasses w/ integrated Blue Tooth tech to interface with your iPod! Look, ma! No wires!

I try to walk every day for at least an hour. Back when I lifted regularly I would lift every day too, but alternate upper and lower body to give the muscles time to recoop. Also if I felt I was still too sore on a particular day I'd skip it and just do cardio. I agree about just trying to be more active, especially if you haven't been active for a while. Every little bit helps.

I normally give myself sunday off (since gym hours are wackey that day) but I'm going to start exercising those days too, maybe a bit lighter, no strength training, just cardio. Currently I do cardio 6 days a week, strength training 3. Wanna bump it up to cardio 7 days a week, and strength training either 3 or 4, havnt made up my mind.

Hi Ken,
You make a good point about R&R, but I also agree with Russ about making a concerted effort to get more active. My problem is that I have virtually no willpower. At the moment I'm really revved up and motivated and I'm scared that if I deliberately slow things down by taking a day off - well, next time it will be 2 days off and so on. So, while I'm fired up like this I'm going to try to set up some habits for myself that will hopefully carry me over the days when the motivation drops.
What about upper body and lower body exercises on alternate days - wouldn't that give the different muscle groups time to recover?

Maybe I misspoke at first. Let me explain. By pushing myself to maintain a streak of exercising, I'm trying to make of point of getting more active for myself. I don't lift everyday, in fact I may only get to lift 2 heavy days and one light day. Those other days, I run a couple of miles, swim, play a 9 hole round of golf at the local pitch and putt or whatever comes down the pipe for the day. I'm shutting it down so my muscles can heal but I'm not sitting.

A day of rest and reflection should always be added to your workout schedule, to give your body the time it needs. Your muscle don't grow while you're working out, they grow while they're rested AFTER the workout.

I'd advise fitting in a rest day once per week at minimum, depending on how vigorous your workouts are. It helps prevent injuries that can sideline you for a week or more. Instead of counting days straight, maybe count "full week workouts" or "scheduled workouts"... so it would be "20 straight workouts without missing one" and so on.

Remember, even God took day 7 off. I don't think he flexed in front of a mirror or anything, but to each his own right? :)

I bought myself a home multi-gym yesterday (so yesterdays workout was carting the %$#^&* thing upstairs and putting it together). A few of my mates were going out for a beer tonight and asked me along - but I couldn't wait to get home to start working out - so I cried off!! Sheesh, what's happening to me with this motivation?

Anyway, I'm taking a leaf out of your book and starting my own workout streak tonight! - Let's see if I can match 20!

Very true about trying to beat that 20 day streak. After a while it's hard to sustain them but if you do, it's awesome! I went to the gym yesterday. Moved to my next phase in my workout and man did it kick my a$$. Can't wait to do that one again!

Russ,
20 days straight is not too bad. But even better - you've now got a target to beat in your next exercise streak!

Well, 20 days later, the streak is done. I went to the gym yesterday, it was closed. Then I went home and there was no place to workout since my daughter had her friends over for a sleepover. It got too late to run so I had to let go of the streak. It gave me some time to think about it. 20 days straight is a good run to do anything. And there were times I didn't want to get up and do it. I'm happy I went that long. While I see the need for downtime, I see I need to keep moving if I'm going to make it. Inertia is a powerful thing. Once you get something or someone like me moving, you don't want to waste the energy to do it again.

I will start a new streak tonight. Guys and occasional ladies who wander through here, if I don't come in here tonight or tomorrow and tell you either I've been in the gym or run at least two miles, hound me. I'm serious. I don't want to slow down and if I know I'll catch hell from you guys, I know I'll find the time and/or energy to get it done!
