I agree with Russ, in the last four years the only PAC 10 team to beat USC was Cal in a triple overtime, four years ago. These teams have been studying up on SC trying each year new strategies to beat Pete's incredible teams. They're getting damn close on figuring out a way to beat him. Notice how Wazzou completely shut down SC's nonstop attempts to create turnovers (watch how all USC defensive players try and strip the ball every play they can) and they could barely get by Washington put a lot of pressure on the new quarterback, was almost as good at not allowing turnovers and turned the trick against Pete, getting their team to play like SC in terms of trying to create turnovers on every play. ASU played very similar strategies. It's a different game in the Pac 10 when they're playing USC.

Now compare that to games Arkansas and Oklahoma played against USC, traditional football, focused on the running game. Oklahoma was shut down (but did a great job at holding USC under thirty, something no team was able to do in the last season). And Arkansas was railroaded (at home). These are stellar teams that play great football, but they were outclassed by Pete Carroll in the same way he outclassed the Pac 10 teams the last four years. Unfortunately USC had no defense for a quarterback as agile, mobile, and fast as Vince Young, but they still played Texas an incredible game last year

I'm looking forward to the Mizzou - KState game this weekend. They're definitely a team to watch, next year they could be a top bowl contender, but they ought to put up a strong season this year, even after shooting themselves in the foot when Texas Tech rallied in the second half last week. A loss like that may even be good for such a young team. The games against Nebraska and Oklahoma should be some of the best college ball this fall.

USC's been winning ugly true but it's been winning for four years now. It's hard to knock them out of the top if they don't cooperate and lose a couple. Pete Carroll's just one hell of a college coach.

Well, I was right to be nervous about Wake Forest. Three bad minutes just completely ruined the game for NC State. Oh well.

Meanwhile, the BCS continues to completely confuse me. While I can understand Auburn and Florida's high ranking (especially Florida's considering their only loss was to a top 10 team away) because of the SEC's strength, I cannot understand Texas being ranked behind Notre Dame.

Notre Dame's only loss was to a team comparable to the team that Texas lost to. Both lost at home by a good amount of points (though Notre Dame lost by more). However, Texas actually beat another good team in Oklahoma convincingly whereas Notre Dame needed a huge choke job to survive against a bad Michigan State team. Granted, with the amount of teams in front of both of them, it shouldn't come down to those two for a shot at the national title. However, I can't believe that Notre Dame would be ranked higher than Texas.

Of course, this will all be moot if Texas loses at Nebraska this weekend. Tough game...it has me nervous.

Disappointing week for the Gators but it was bound to happen with their schedule, lets just hope this is not a trend, GO GATORS!!!!

Well I guess that Heisman run is over, at least in his own mind. I did get kinda nervous for a quick minute early on. Maybe it was the letdown from the OU game that had them giving up a quick 10. I thought the defense looked good, causing some turnovers. Colt did a nice job, too, but I think his receivers saved him a couple of time.

Auburn-Florida. WOW! I wish I could say I was disappointed with the outcome, but I'd by lying. Sorry, Laz.

Washington St, Washington and ASU. They've all come close, but so far, USC has skated by. I think it's just a matter of time before they go down.

What is going on in Florida. Have they completely lost their minds @ Miami? Ugly, ugly, ugly.

P.S. Congratulations Vince Young. 1st NFL win.

Houston Texans are just a sorry team now. Hey Richard, I believe Mario had a pretty decent game, though. He's probably wishing he was picked by another team.

Thanks. Yeah, I try to make it to all home games. Baylor's CB is a self-proclaimed Heisman candidate, so hopefully Colt and Limas can humble him a bit.

I'm more nervous about NC State and Wake Forest. Even when they are bad, we struggle with them, and this year they're good. Hopefully, Daniel Evans can keep his winning streak going.

3-0 would be a nice start to the ACC season.

Richard,

Welcome back, even if you're just coming up for air. Adam told me he's also swamped right now. It's just that time of year. Going to the game tomorrow? Baylor. Big whoop.

Russ, it could be worse, you could be a Houston Texan fan. Well, at least they have 1 win...against a winless Dolphin team. Oh well, I digress.

Man, I haven't been on in so long, they've changed the format of the forums. Sorry for my absence...school is just killing me. Maybe I should stay off this forum though; since I've been gone, neither of my teams have lost. Let's hope that's not the reason.

I love the school so leaving is not an option. I'd just like one good game this year. Homecoming. Win that and I'll grumble quietly on the beach. Lose it and we might storm athletics with pitchforks and torches, which will be interesting because there isn't a farm within 20 miles of school. I guess it could be worse. I could be a Raider fan.

Midnight Madness Friday. I probably won't be able to go because I have to go to work the next morning but I'll be there in spirit.

It is never too early to have the conversation about firing coaches. For that matter, it's never too early to start banging one's head against the wall. I think both are legitimate beginning as early as the 1st quarter of the 1st game of the season. Sometimes it is really tough being a fan. Oh well, Russ, no one can ever accuse you of jumping on the bandwagon. An O-fer season so far? Yes, let's hope your basketball team(s) have a better start. On the plus side, you still have that incredible weather in SD. Little consolation, I know.

Hey Marcia,

I'm about to start banging my head on a wall sometime soon. Is it too early to fire coaches? I know it's October but SDSU's Defensive Coordinator has to go. Now! Injuries aside, they just aren't showing up prepared to take on anyone. I wouldn't think it was possible to 0 for the season but they're on pace to do just that. Maybe it's the perfect storm for SDSU. Injuries in a lot of key positions. A new coaching staff. Hangovers. Gout. Whatever they want to blame it on, it's unwatchable now. At least Fisher's singed for five more years. Can't wait for basketball season to start up again.

Pretty good weekend for college football. I totally did not see Auburn being upset by Ark. That makes things interesting.

Laz, you must be thrilled with your Gators. #2. It should be a very interesting game this Saturday.

I personally think that USC is ranked too high. They've struggled in the final minutes the last 2 weeks. I figured they'd fall before Auburn. Anyway, scoreboard watching should be quite entertaining in the weeks to come.

Go Horns!

Gators have a rough season ahead but if they can continue to use their offense weapons and their defense stays the same they should win the majority if not all their games.

I know it's only Tuesday, but it's that time of year where visions of pigskin dance in my head. There will be a few games I'm keeping my eye on. Of course, out at the Cotton Bowl, it's UT and OU. I won't be there this year, but it's great fun. The stadium is literally half red and half burnt orange. It's also a pretty good event for people watching as the State Fair is also going on which means all the carnival folks come out. Enough said about that.

Russ, I wasn't calling you out on your rant. Rather, I was suggesting that you showed such great restraint when discussing your team. When I think about that loss to OSU, all I want to do is bang my fists, kick my feet and have a full blown temper tantrum. Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Anyone see Oregon take apart Arizona State
Oregon is now 4-0 and 2-0 in the PAC-10. Dixon and Stewart are perfect for each other. This is going to be a great season. I would like to see them have as good a season as Harrington's last one with us. We should have been invited to the Rose Bowl that year.

Ouch to Gators. It was close until the last quarter. John Parker is looking pretty good, now if they can get the rest of the team to play the same way. I'm starting to wonder if Bama shouldn't start thinking of another coach, just thinking? Rocetop, those Vols looked good against Memphis. They're definitely coming together.

Vols lose to Gators by a point. Just kills me but that is football. WE came back to our game this week. Ainge is looking good.

I guess it is a good thing the SEC beats each other up. OR we would have 6 teams in TOP 10. (smiling)

Yeah, the Texas game was horribly boring today. I know that 5 I-AA schools have beaten I-A schools this year, but it was horribly obvious that this wasn't gonna be one of them. The crowd was obviously not into it, though the largest chant I heard was "Beat OU" as the team walked off the field after The Eyes of Texas.

This coming week will be full of big games for me as NC State hosts FSU on Thursday night and then the Red River Shootout on Saturday. Wish I had known how to get tickets for that earlier, but I'll certainly be going next year.

Marcia's calling me out for my rants. Man, you're hard core! We've gotta keep you around a while.

I was trying to keep from getting to the point where the rant became a pathetic whine. But, if they keep dropping games like they just did to San Jose State. Pathetic, used to be our tune up team, San Jose State. I'm going to lose my restraint quick!

I understand the 12th game addition, no takers, certain teams wanting a home-home commit, others wanting too much money. I get that, but I still don't like UT playing Sam Houston today. I really don't like this as a tune up for OU next week. ( At least they aren't playing anyone at all today.) I know the strength of schedule doesn't offically matter, but I'll bet the voters still know SHSU is a mediocre D-2 school. Bottom line, I think I'm still mad about the loss to OSU. I can picture, among all of the other things that went wrong that day, that fumble on the 1 yd. line.

What happened to Bama? I thought they might pull the upset but instead seemed to meltdown in the 4th?

Russ, you think your last post was a rant? You are a mere amateur. Perhaps, you just have the ability to exercise more restraint.

Marcia

P.S. At least I can finally watch Vince tomorrow. He's the official starter against the Cowboys.

I'd lick my wounds from last week but I'm still licking the ones from the week before. SDSU isn't even competitive this year. I guess there really was a difference between 1st and 2nd string QBs this year and that drop in production is staggering. The 1st year of any coach's tenure is rough and I've seen some pretty bad ones. I haven't seen an 0-3 start where there have been such big breakdowns in a while. It's turning into a rough year and it's not even October. I hope they can turn it around soon or at least get Coach Long the recruits he's looking for for next year. It this rate we'll lose all our best high school talent to USC and UCLA and be stuck with JuCo retreads again. I mean, who wants to play somewhere that they get their heads kicked in every week? OK, rant over. Putting soapbox away.

Hi,

Who are you guys tuning into tomorrow? I really don't see any upsets, but you never know. It probably goes without saying, but I will be watching Texas. I'm going to keep an eye on OSU and Penn State, although I doubt Joe Pa will field a terribly competitive team tomorrow. (No matter how many times I see him, I'm always amazed at his glasses.)

I also intend to check out West Virginia. Are they really as good as a #4 ranking? I don't think I will get a good gauge as they're playing East Carolina.

Richard, I'm not going to be at the game tomorrow. Have fun and put up your horns for me, please.

Maybe, their loss also ended a losing streak, we had never beat them before. I,m not sure why their mad at us we didnt make the calls. Good luck with them, I think it all adds to the entertainment value anyway ha ha. Last time I checked it was still just a game ( not sure I would say that in Sooner country wearing a Duck t shirt though) Have a good one

Jeff-

Those folks at OU are really upset. Possible pulling out of game with Washington? Death threats? Wowser!

We (Horns) get them in a few weeks. They get plenty worked up for this matchup every year anyway. I wonder if they'll still be steaming over the game with you guys by then?
