If I was to ever reach my recommended BMI I'd be in hospital for tests cause I'd be ill.... lol

Well, the thing I find amusing is that I could weigh 164 lbs., and I'd be considered "healthy." But, heaven forbid, I should weigh a portly 165!--Then I'd be F A T!!!!!!
I think that BMI might be better suited for people from the Ice Age--when the average height for a male was something like 4', 11". I could see a guy like that tipping the scales at 140. Me? I think that I'd have to be near death's door!

I was the same when I had mine done, my ideal according to BMI is about 12 to 14 stone, by the body mass analysis 0%fat at present I'm supposed to be 17st 12lbs as an ideal, a large discrepency. Keep on loosing.

Well as a 228 lb. 5'9" guy, my BMI is 33.5 which is decidedly obese, but I just had a fitness evaluation done and while the trainer said that I was certainly overweight, I wasn't nearly as out of shape as my BMI indicated. For example, the "ideal weight" for a guy my height and age is supposedly between 125 and 160 lbs., but for me, if I had 0% body fat, I'd still weigh 186 lbs.
C'est la vie

I don't its just things I do can be BMI related. My BMI is sitting around 38 at the moment. Blood pressure is 130/78, sugar levels etc are all spot on. Ive had 4 medicals in the last five weeks. Dont take no pills or supplements. Main diff now is the exercise and not stuffing the wrong things into my mouth. Thanks for the reply. All the best Andy

I look at it as one part of the fitness puzzle. My goal weight is 230. At 6'1" that's still considered overweight/obese. Now the last time I was 230, I carried at most 20 lbs of fat. If I end up carrying 20-25 lbs of fat again, there's no way you'll be able to say I'm fat. If your BMI is high, you're blood pressure and blood sugar is high, then you're looking at trouble. Don't use BMI as the be all/end all measurement to gauge your health.

Just wondered how many folks had a gripe about BMI. Reason for asking as I recently had a body mass make up analysis as part of a fitness assesment, now the results came back that with no muscle gain only fat loss my ideal weight is 17stone 12lbs, put this in any BMI calculation and you still get obese, now as these all go for health insurances etc, you could be perfectly fit but doesnt that little magic number put you in a higher risk catergory. Now recently had a talk with a Doctor and said isn't it a bit of a joke, he stated that while there were a lot of discrepencies that for the majority it was a good indicator, I said well that doesnt help me much if one of the criteria is BMI. It then all boiled down to that he had then to use his judgment and ignore the numbers. Now thats alright unless it is all assumed from a bit of paper you have filled in and not had the pleasure, of seeing a proffesional
